Reporting to the CEO and working closely with an Accounting Technician and external partners the Finance Manager plays an important role in ensuring financial accuracy compliance and transparency across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Operations
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations and manage the work of the Accounting Technician.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity across financial systems including Community Suite and Sage 50.
- Develop document and improve financial systems procedures and internal controls.
- Utilize Payworks to prepare biweekly payroll.
- Remain current on accounting standards best practices and sector trends.
Accounting Compliance & Reporting
- Manage full-cycle fund and investment accounting including income allocations distributions and administrative fee calculations.
- Prepare monthly financial statements trial balances and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Prepare annual fund statements for fund holders and financial reports for the CEO Board and Finance & Investment Committees.
- Coordinate and support the annual audit process and prepare all federal filings including the T3010.
- Prepare T4s and T4As annual WCB payroll report.
- Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for operations and granting activities.
Investment & Risk Stewardship
- Act as primary liaison with COFs investment advisors and coordinate quarterly investment reporting.
- Maintain bond portfolio schedules accruals and investment-related documentation.
- Support the Finance Committee by preparing reports and participating in meetings.
Donor Fund Holder & Program Support
- Respond to donor fund-holder and auditor inquiries related to financial records receipts and statements.
- Support the CEO with donor requests related to gifting options and financial structures.
- Liaise with donors and financial institutions on in-kind stock and insurance donations.
- Assist with deeds of gift preparation amendments and compliance.
- Provide full accounting support for the Reaching Home program including separate books banking and a dedicated annual audit.
- Support bursary and scholarship fund administration with donors and educational institutions.
Systems & Team Support
- Lead the continued optimization of financial systems including COFs transition to Community Suite.
- Act as an internal resource for staff on financial systems and reporting.
- Prepare custom reports and data extracts as required.
Requirements
- CPA designation.
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting fund accounting and investment accounting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365; comfort learning new systems (Community Suite experience an asset).
- Experience in the nonprofit or charitable sector is an asset.
- Working knowledge of CRA regulations related to charitable organizations receipting and donations.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with high attention to detail.
- Clear professional written and verbal communication.
- Well-organized self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Adaptable and comfortable navigating complex regulatory environments.
- Collaborative flexible and aligned with COFs community-focused mission.
Salary & Benefits
This role offers a competitive total compensation package including an hourly rate of $46.00 $51.00 (commensurate with experience and qualifications). The position is full-time with flexibility for the right candidate who may prefer reduced hours (minimum four days per week). Additional benefits include extended health and dental coverage RRSP matching generous vacation entitlement paid sick time and statutory holidays and a supportive flexible and mission-driven work environment.
