About Us

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the states fish and wildlife resources through research scientific management wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolinas fishing hunting trapping and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians wildlife law enforcement officers wildlife educators communication specialists and customer service information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolinas wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters anglers boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Hunter & Trapper Engagement Coordinator (Conservation Program Coordinator II) for our Wildlife Education Division.

The Wildlife Education Division is responsible for raising public awareness about the agency its mission and its programs. The Division aims to engage and influence individuals through education and various opportunities encouraging them to actively participate in the conservation of the states wildlife resources. The Division develops and delivers education programs focused on hunting fishing and shooting sports along with other conservation outreach initiatives. With educators located throughout the state a dedicated fishing education center and several shooting ranges Division staff actively engage the public by providing outdoor skills training and educational programs that promote the conservation of North Carolinas wildlife and habitats. Additionally the Division implements program planning and evaluation to ensure ongoing participation in conservation and wildlife-related recreational activities aligned with the agencys mission and purpose.

The primary purpose of the Hunter and Trapper Engagement Coordinator is to lead the agencys efforts to strengthen hunting and trapping engagement across the state with a focus on recruitment retention and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers. Recognizing the critical role hunters and trappers play in wildlife conservation and population management this role is central to sustaining North Carolinas hunting and trapping heritage and supporting long-term wildlife management goals. The individual in this role will develop and implement strategic initiatives to increase participation in hunting and trapping activities working closely with agency staff conservation partners landowners and local state and federal stakeholders. Responsibilities include coordinating outreach programs building partnerships and representing the agency in public and professional forums at both the state and national levels. This position also identifies and pursues sponsorship and collaborative opportunities to support hunting and trapping engagement efforts as directed by agency leadership. It is a high-visibility role that requires strong leadership communication and relationship-building skills to advance the agencys mission and ensure the future of hunting and trapping in North Carolina. Tasks will include but not be limited to the following:
Leads the development and refinement of hunter and trapper engagement goals strategies and materials including curriculum lesson plans outreach resources and program evaluation processes.
Represents the agency at state and national forums and coordinates with internal divisions NGOs landowners and government partners.
Designs and delivers engagement programs workshops and events with measurable outcomes evaluates initiatives using data and feedback and prepares reports and presentations for leadership.
Conducts research on national R3 trends translates concepts into actionable plans and secures grants sponsorships and cooperative agreements to support program growth.
Manages volunteers and seasonal employees maintains accurate records and reports handles scheduling and financial documentation and assists with other agency projects as needed.

This position is home-based. Applicants must reside within 90 miles of NCWRC Headquarters in Raleigh NC (Wake County). This is a MondayFriday position working 40 hours per week with occasional evening or weekend commitments. The position carries statewide responsibilities and requires monthly travel with occasional travel outside North Carolina.

  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with volunteers government officials organizations and the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in wildlife management fisheries management parks and recreation public administration or business administration from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience related to the area of assignment;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
