Austal is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy Australian Border Force and the Department of Defence employing approximately 1000 people in facilities in located Western Australia Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Austal has entered into a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) with the Commonwealth of Australia launching a new era of continuous naval shipbuilding within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia. As Australias Strategic Shipbuilder Austal will start by delivering eighteen Landing Craft Medium and eight Landing Craft Heavy vessels for the Australian Army.

The SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce as we deliver existing and future programs under a long-term partnership. Through effective collaboration with our supply chain partners Austal is driving innovation developing sovereign capability and creating lasting opportunities for Australian industry and workers.

To support this growth we are building a highly skilled team to engage with local industry and supply chains and contribute to complex large-scale projects that reflect Austals proven capabilities and trusted performance.

About the Opportunity

The Commissioning STW Lead oversees the final stages of vessel commissioning and Set to Work (STW) including defect rectification. They support the project team and contractors in recommissioning equipment and systems working closely with Waterfront Supervisors to complete commissioning before the vessels Transfer of Custody (TOC) from Austal to ABF.

Whats Involved

  • Commissioning & STW Management: Oversee commissioning and STW delivery for the program
  • Project Schedule Performance: Define tasks deliverables interdependencies durations and resources to meet project objectives
  • Project Governance & Assurance: Apply project management principles to ensure delivery aligns with agreed objectives
  • Stakeholder Management: Proactively manage stakeholders and clients within business constraints
  • Team Engagement: Lead empower and support multidisciplinary teams to achieve project success

Desirable Skills / Experience / Attributes:

Essential:

  • Trade qualification.
  • 5 years in production delivery management and leadership roles.
  • Construction Safety Induction (White Card).
  • Strong communication negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Customer-focused with commercial acumen.
  • Proven people management and team-building ability.
  • Knowledge of project cost risk management and earned value principles.

Desirable:

  • Project Management qualification and methodology expertise (PMBOK PRINCE2 etc.).
  • Safety management knowledge (Control of Contractors High-Risk Operations).
  • Maritime and frontline leadership experience.
  • Maritime Vessel Maintenance Management
  • Commissioning and Technical closure
  • Management of Integrated Test Plans (ITP)
  • Review and Acceptance of Objective Quality Evidence (OQE)
  • Industry and Stakeholder Management
  • Engineering documentation Management
  • Membership in professional PM bodies (AIPM PMI IPMA).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Defence sustainment experience.
