Job Summary

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must possess a Masters degree and hold or be eligible to hold a Virginia license in administration and supervision. A minimum of five years of teaching experience with special education populations is required with experience as a department head lead teacher or in a related instructional leadership role preferred. The candidate must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the principles practices and current issues related to the delivery of special education programs as well as knowledge of state and federal regulations governing assigned special education functional areas. The ability to guide and train teachers in effective instructional techniques and strategies is required. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers students families community members and administrative staff.

DESCRIPTION

The Supervisor of Special Education is responsible for planning developing implementing and monitoring the divisions special education programs for the division. The position chairs eligibility/IEP meetings and manifestation determination review meetings; interprets state and federal regulations; provides staff development; supervises staff; and supports the divisions special education programs.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Supervises and administers division wide special education programs
  • Chairs eligibility and IEP meetings as assigned
  • Interprets state and federal regulations governing special education and ensures compliance
  • Serves as a resource and advisor to principals and teachers regarding assigned special education programs
  • Supervises and evaluates the work of special education compliance officers in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Assists the Human Resources Department with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for special education instructional positions
  • Assists in developing and conducting division wide staff development for special education instructional staff in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Coordinates meetings with specialists department chairs teachers and administrators and disseminates information regarding current developments and teaching practices in the field
  • Supervises the ordering inventory and distribution of materials and equipment for assigned special education programs
  • Coordinates division wide activities and events that promote academic and behavioral gains for special education students
  • Serves as a central office contact and liaison with parents and the community regarding assigned special education instructional programs
  • Develops appropriate advocacy positions/statements for special education programs and the needs of special education students
  • Ensures that data are collected and maintained for all special education reports and submit reports in a timely manner
  • Serves as case manager for private day school students for assigned school and prepares/presents cases for the Family Assessment Planning Team (FAPT)
  • Performs work as assigned

SUPERVISION

The employee reports to the Director of Student Services.

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties performed are typically in a school or office setting. Performs professional work providing support and consultative services for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing sitting walking and light lifting. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.
