Job Summary

Location: Village Market Deli
Hours: Full-Time Hourly
Pay: $21.03 - $27.36/hr.

Job Function:
To effectively direct and supervise the activities and operations of all Deli department personnel to achieve the sales and profit goals established for the department; to provide exceptional customer service; to ensure that the work shifts of all department personnel contribute to the financial best interest of the store.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

General

Observe all store rules and university policies;
Check and maintain high standards of food preparation and service;
Instruct and maintain high standards of sanitation and safety in all areas;
Collaborate with upper store management in the hiring of staff and resolving personnel issues;
Interview hire and schedule student employees or delegate to department heads if applicable;
Schedule shifts for all Deli employees and monitor their attendance;
Uphold Village Market uniform policies for all Deli staff;
Conduct in service training for staff and students when applicable;
Directly in charge of motivating counseling and disciplining of student employees when necessary;
Instruct staff in effective time management;
Instruct staff in how to manage students with on-the-job training;
Purchase and inventory supplies and other necessities that assures quality food service at a minimum cost;
Continually work on establishing standardized recipes and search for new menu items and sample;
Look for and implement new revenue opportunities;
Calculate recipe and portion sizes;
Check and maintain Deli costs and track food waste;
Manage the merchandising and layout of all Deli items for maximum appeal;
Provide updated prices and weekly menus to the appropriate Village Market department staff;
Manage the coordination of providing all pertinent financial documents to the appropriate staff;
Approve time cards and monitor weekly worked hours of Deli staff and student employees;
Be innovative with ideas to implement special food promotions;
Perform yearly evaluations for all full and part-time staff;
Maintain all Deli equipment in working order and inform upper management of any problems;
Perform all other reasonably business-related functions as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

A high school degree or GED equivalent is required;
A college degree in food service management or a related business field is strongly preferred
A minimum of 3 years of industry-related management experience or a combination of related education and experience is strongly preferred;

Mathematical Skills:

Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts gross margins markup percentages proportions ratios volume and to apply concepts of basic algebra;
Ability to verify vendor invoice charges and counts and complete required accounting reports including inventory receiving and variations in column totals;
Ability to input data into computer using various spreadsheets and software programs.

Language Skills:

Ability to speak read write interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency
Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure guidelines including effective departmental memos employee corrective action notices menus and product and customer signs

Other Skills or Requirements:

Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with the nature and duties of every staff position in the department including procedures policies and operations;
Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity accuracy cleanliness harmony and safety established at the store.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand sit and use hands to handle finger or feel objects tools or controls;
The employee must frequently walk talk or hear and reach with hands and arms occasionally; the employee must crouch or kneel;
The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with relative ease;
Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including having sufficient visual acuity to check and verify invoices and other written documents;
Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead storage racks and elevated storage areas;
Be able to sweep and mop floors dust and face shelves and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of glass or plastic containers having liquid contents) employee or customer accidents etc.;
Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes in refrigerated storage areas up to 20 minutes at a time;
Must be able to work with a variety of fruits vegetables flour oils spices and other agents without negative allergic consequences;
Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common commercial cleaning agents such as bleach and cleaners during routine housekeeping duties;
Have sufficient memory retention skills to memorize daily menu items and specials customer orders etc.

Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
