GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health Social Services Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social emotional and spiritual wellbeing with culture at the heart of everything we do.
Position Purpose
The position of a Residential Youth Worker at Nungurra is to provide short-term crisis accommodation that is safe and inclusive for young people between the ages of 16 and 21 who are experiencing housing instability. The position supports young people to improve their wellbeing feel empowered build resilience and increase their independence. The position requires someone who is a positive role model a mentor and a strong advocate. Nungurra operates from a 24 hour/7 day a week rotating/rolling roster and requires staff attendance throughout those hours.
Key Selection Criteria
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Aboriginal culture with the ability to liaise with and support the local community.
An understanding of the social and political issues impacting on young people who are experiencing housing instability or who are at risk of housing instability.
Demonstrated capacity to deliver culturally sensitive practices in working with young people.
A commitment and ability to create strong links with appropriate services and networks and an understanding and knowledge of the available resources in Gippsland.
An understanding of team responsibilities and dynamics and the skills required to support and encourage team members.
Demonstrated ability to work independently be self-motivated and to also work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
An ability to put personal opinion and beliefs to one side and assist clients with their issues and needs however conflicting they maybe to your own views/opinions beliefs.
Knowledge in working with young people particularly those with complex behaviours.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
Valid Victorian drivers licence ESSENTIAL
Cert IV or above in a qualification related to Youth Work DESIRABLE
Current First Aid Cert Level 2 (or willingness to obtain) ESSENTIAL
A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
