Unit Function | RNCF Scotland and Northern Ireland (S&NI) STEM Lead |
Preamble | Director P&T (R&A) provides the NCHQ lead for governance strategy and policy for individual and collective training and education delivery across the entire maritime training spectrum ensuring the delivery and assurance of training output and capabilities to meet the standards required by operational commanders. The 2* HQ provides direction and guidance to the 1* training delivery Commands for management of future maritime training requirements and in year/ABC forecast of funds and resources. This governance extends to include the RNs engagement within the Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) arena the RNs engagement with the University Technical College (UTC) programme and the delivery of bespoke STEM events/competitions. STEM Engagement is a key element of the RNs wider outreach activities and is facilitated by volunteer STEM ambassadors. STEM activity is coordinated by the STEM Team which draws on a dedicated STEM budget and is overseen by the Youth Engagement Team within Royal Navy Cadet Forces (RNCF). STEM activity is governed by the Defence STEM Youth Engagement Strategy (overseen by the 3* Defence Engineering Champion). The RN is formally affiliated with 11 engineering UTCs within the programme and 2SL is a member of the Advisory Board to the Baker Dearing Educational Trust the umbrella organisation for UTCs. As part of this commitment the UTC Team supports affiliated UTCs by conducting engineering and personal development instruction at the colleges and organising residential events/visits. The RNCF S&NI STEM Lead role is an FTRS(FC) position based in Faslane but can work from any convenient Service location within Scotland and working with RNCF and STEM personnel in Portsmouth Liverpool and Devonport. |
Position Role | This position is responsible for researching proposing solutions planning implementing and coordinating STEM outreach projects and initiatives for the Royal Navy in academic cadet and public facing environments across Scotland Northern Ireland and other locations determined as a priority. This position is crucial in promoting STEM education inspiring the next generation of Naval Service engineers and technologists through its STEM Engagement Strategy and supporting the Cadet and Youth organisations and the Royal Navys recruitment efforts. The postholder will liaise with Naval Regional Commanders (NRCs) relevant STEM charities industry and academic key stakeholders. |

Responsibilities |
Create and organise STEM theory and practical instruction that is aligned to curricula and individual requirements to support the RN STEM Engagement Strategy and intent of RNCF. | |
Represent the RN locally in S&NI and nationally where required in STEM engagement and outreach activities including events in UTCs educational establishments and the wider community including public events and in support of wider RNCF strategy. | |
Liaise with NRCs CO OC and units within RNCF to provide or support the provision of STEM activities in accordance with intent directed by RNCF HQ. | |
Consider and coordinate STEM project ideas (design and build) with charity partners events and competitions liaising with regional STEM Ambassadors for their support. | |
Build and maintain an STEM Ambassador regional network. | |
Manage the storage and safe movement of STEM and other Service equipment and resources liaising with other agencies and establishments as appropriate to secure facilities transport and accommodation bookings iaw extant policy and regulation. | |
Supervise students cadets and young people involved in STEM/UTC activities including overnight on MoD establishments. | |
Update the chain of command at defined schedules on the progress of STEM outreach projects. | |
Welcome coach and mentor Service personnel loaned by PSG and other outside agencies and provide divisional responsibilities including SJAR insert slips. | |
Maintain a database (OneTool or any successor) to track STEM engagements including the provision of mandatory data as required by RNCF HQ. | |
Track STEM outreach expenditure incl. T&S and equipment provision. | |
Attend and support RNCF Recruit and Attract and Youth Engagement Team events as required. | |
Liaise with hosting units primarily HMNB Clyde to ensure that the STEM unit meets environmental logistical H&S and other requirements / protocols mandated by the host organisation noting that the STEM team is a lodging unit. Maintain an orderly and functioning office environment. | |
Research and abide any specific protocols and regulations that relate to security of the STEM team when operating in Northern Ireland. | |
Maintain vehicle usage logs fuel cards or electric charging equipment and administer any Service vehicles provided to achieve tasks herein. | |
Conduct tasks as directed by Dir RNCF to meet the RNCF mission. | |
