Since 1971 Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News Virginia offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness developmental disabilities and/or substance use disorders.

Are you excited about this Peer Recovery Specialist II job

As a Peer Recovery Specialist II with the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board you will play a pivotal role in enhancing services for individuals in crisis due to mental health substance use or developmental disabilities. Leveraging the Marcus Alert system you will coordinate critical support between 911 and 988 crisis centers ensuring effective behavioral health responses. Your expertise in identifying symptoms of mental illness such as hallucinations or self-harm thoughts will enable you to provide essential peer support and advocacy. Through one-on-one and group sessions you will facilitate goal-setting and recovery planning utilizing tools like the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to empower individuals. You will guide clients in building social skills promote employment opportunities and teach problem-solving techniques all while sharing your own recovery journey to inspire hope.

Your role will demand excellent communication skills a deep knowledge of recovery processes and the dedication to fostering a supportive trusting environment for those you serve.

To excel as a Peer Recovery Specialist II at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board you must possess a diverse skill set that underpins your ability to provide effective peer support. A Registered Peer Recovery Specialist credential from the VA Board of Counseling is essential which includes completion of the 72-hour DBHDS Peer Recovery Specialist Training combined with at least one year of hands-on experience in the field. Your communication skills should be exceptional encompassing both oral and written abilities as you engage with clients and document services effectively. Proficiency in various software applications including the Microsoft Office suite is vital for maintaining accurate documentation and case management.

Additionally your capacity to establish supportive and trusting relationships with individuals facing mental health challenges will be crucial. Strong decision-making problem-solving abilities and a thorough understanding of the recovery process will enable you to guide individuals in their journey toward wellness and autonomy.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Registered Peer Recovery Specialist (RPRS)with the VA Board of Counseling which includes the completion of DBHDS 72 hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training
  • One year of Peer Recovery Specialist experience.
