  • Package $86272 to $91880 (includes salary range $73737 to $78530 p.a employers contribution to superannuation and 17% loading for working weekends and public holidays)

  • 6 weeks annual leave per year (includes additional leave for working up to 5 public holidays and some weekends)

About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique Field Officer vacancy to work as part ofSydney North team in the iconic Sydney Harbour National Park. Youll work across unique sites like North Head Middle Head Bradleys Head and Dobroyd Head helping to improve and maintain park assets including walking tracks buildings historic sites roads and undertaking weed/pest work.

You will be guided by the senior field staff in your day-to-day work where you will operate and maintain plant and equipment participate in fire management activities respond to visitor enquiries and assist with compliance activities as required.

Day to Day

Every day could be different and open various opportunities for someone who has a particular interest or skillset.

  • Routine weekly service runs to clean and maintain toilet blocks and picnic area including litter collection
  • Use of ride on mowers push mowers and whipper snippers to maintain picnic areas carparks roads and Asset Protection Zones (APZs)
  • Involved with vegetation management along walking track using small plant and equipment such as chainsaws and brushcutters
  • Maintaining walking track surfaces including digging out drainage lines and clearing pits
  • Weed control using various techniques including herbicide use
  • Use of government apps and programs to record routine inspections on military structures gather pest and weed data and pre-start checks on plant and equipment
  • Maintenance and upkeep of the depots workshop yard office space vehicles plant and equipment
  • Involvement with hazard reduction burns and wildfire firefighting duties
  • Assist with special event delivery such as Sydney to Hobart yacht race NYE fireworks on the harbour and other events such as weddings and small scale events
  • Representing the agency: comfortable approaching the public undertaking park compliance or being approached by the public to answer any queries.

  • Fitness and enthusiasm will enable you to thrive and succeed in this diverse and dynamic role
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide variety of tools plant and equipment
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment following mandatory reporting and safety procedures.

Essential requirements

  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent and four-wheel driving certification (capable to obtain).
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to carry out all duties safely and ability to obtain relevant SafeWork NSW certification to appropriately operate and maintain a range of plant and equipment including but not limited to conditionally registered vehicles watercraft lifting apparatus and road maintenance plant as well as the ability and willingness to obtain a First Aid certificate.
  • Certification or ability to obtain certification within the probationary period (up to 12 months) in operating a chainsaw to crosscut and basic tree felling standard; ability to operate two-way radio.
  • Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and support roles including ability to obtain and maintain certification as a crew member or higher within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and a willingness to fly in light aircraft.


This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit enjoy working outdoors as part of a team and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining NSWs most precious natural places.


Field Officer applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. The applicant must pass the task-based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter.
