The Structural Temporary Works Engineer with Birds Design and Engineering Services is responsible for leading the planning assessment and execution of structural temporary works engineering across commercial infrastructure and industrial construction projects nationwide. Acting as the companys subject matter expert this role ensures all temporary structures are designed implemented and maintained in accordance with engineering best practices regulatory requirements and project-specific needs. The successful candidate will identify technical risks develop mitigation strategies establish quality control frameworks and support project teams to ensure safe efficient and compliant temporary works operations.

This opportunity will be based out of the Mississauga office.

What You Will Be Working On

Temporary Works Engineering

  • Be knowledgeable with all relevant provincial OHS acts and regulations design and construction standards and codes.
  • Assess engineering and safety requirements for temporary structures including: tower cranes shoring scaffolding formwork falsework hoarding access systems construction staging and temporary works for construction sites (work platforms guardrails fall protection).
  • Review and validate temporary works designs prepared internally or by third-party engineers.
  • Provide engineering guidance during project estimation planning procurement and execution phases.
  • Ensure temporary works align with project specifications structural requirements and meet applicable compliance to codes and standards.

Risk Identification Analysis & Mitigation

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments related to temporary structural systems.
  • Identify constraints hazards and failure risks across varying project conditions.
  • Develop and communicate robust risk mitigation strategies and engineering controls.
  • Lead or support incident investigations related to temporary works.

Quality Assurance & Site Support

  • Establish maintain and continuously improve site-based quality programs and procedures related to temporary works.
  • Conduct site visits nationally to support project teams with inspections technical problem-solving and compliance verification.
  • Audit temporary works installations for structural adequacy safety and adherence to approved engineering designs.
  • Mentor site personnel in the correct implementation and monitoring of temporary structures.

Subject Matter Expertise & Leadership

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for structural temporary works engineering across the organization.
  • Provide training develop reference materials and promote best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal teams - including safety quality estimating project management and other engineering disciplines - to drive technical excellence.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives relating to temporary works processes design standards and construction methodologies.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelors degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Masters degree an asset).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (.) in good standing with at least one Canadian province with ability to obtain licenses in other jurisdictions.
  • Additional certification in temporary works design or construction safety considered an asset.
  • Minimum 15 years of structural or temporary works engineering experience in commercial infrastructure or industrial construction.
  • Demonstrated experience in auditing assessing and reviewing temporary works systems such as scaffolding shoring falsework stability systems formwork heavy lifts cofferdams roadway and railway protection systems dewatering systems elevators elevating platforms bridges.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods site operations and structural behaviour.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing people and construction teams.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software and engineering design tools and word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian building codes OH&S regulations and CSA standards (including Canadian Bridge Design Code).
  • Knowledge of American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret structural engineering drawings and specifications construction documents and contractor means and methods.
  • Excellent communication collaboration and presentation skills.
  • Strong skills in establishing and maintaining document control and record keeping.
  • Ability to work independently and travel extensively across Canada.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
