St Vincents Health Australia (SVHA) is launching its future as a Connected Intelligent Healthcare organisation to unify data AI and intelligence across our national footprint. We are seeking a high-calibre Senior Data Engineer to be a foundational senior leader of this transformation. This is a chance to build greenfield mission-critical infrastructure that defines the national standard for a unified data platform and ethical AI deployment in healthcare.

You will work closely with the Data & AI Platform lead Data & AI Engineering & Analytics teams and clinical and operational stakeholders to deliver governed high-performing and scalable data solutions across one of Australias most diverse health and aged care ministries.

This role is central to enabling remote patient monitoring virtual care AI-assisted clinical decision support and predictive analytics models that enhance safety reduce administrative burden and improve care outcomes across our public hospitals private hospitals aged care services and virtual health programs.

What youll do

  • Build optimise and maintain enterprise-grade data pipelines (ETL/ELT) across Azure Data Factory Databricks/Fabric and SQL/Analysis Services
  • Gather profile and integrate data from multiple systems to feed our Data Lakehouse and analytical models
  • Own the pipelines that ingest complex FHIR and HL7 streams from our multi-EMR landscape translating disparate clinical formats into a standardised unified Silver Layer

  • Deliver optimized business solutions by data modelling/data architecture performing impact/risk/gap analysis identification of facts dimensions aggregates and hierarchies

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates to manage Azure data resources programmatically
  • Support AI readiness by designing and building ML- and Generative-AI-optimised pipelines including Vector Database pipelines (for RAG architectures) and governed feature stores
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists to operationalise machine learning models (MLOps) managing model registries feature stores and drift monitoring
  • Contribute to AI system governance by implementing data lineage bias detection and PII masking techniques within the data pipelines to ensure patient privacy and responsible data use
  • Identify new opportunities for data gathering including the ingestion of unstructured data (clinical notes images) to support downstream AI applications

What youll bring

  • 5 years experience in data engineering data management and data warehousing.
  • Tertiary qualification Degree in Data Science Statistics Computer Science or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years experience in data engineering data management data modelling data architecture and data warehousing technologies and practices
  • Demonstrable recent experience (ideally at least three years) in ETL and data warehouse solution design on Microsoft Azure platforms including Azure Data Factory
  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory SQL Python/Scala and modern Data Lakehouse platforms (Databricks or Microsoft Fabric)
  • Experience with modern Data Lakehouse architectures blending data warehousing and data science capabilities
  • Solid understanding of dimensional modelling star schema design and cloud data architectures
  • Sound knowledge of Relational Database management concepts and data modelling
  • Experience building optimised pipelines for ML/AI applications or a desire to deepen skills in this area
  • Familiarity with Power BI Analysis Services and enterprise reporting ecosystems
  • Excellent business acumen with the ability to work with stakeholders at all levels

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge and experience of the health industry
  • Exposure to structured/unstructured data big data architecture and predictive analytics solutions
  • Knowledge of Generative AI concepts including Prompt Engineering RAG architectures vector databases and using Azure OpenAI Service
  • Familiarity with containerisation (Docker Kubernetes) for deploying data applications
  • Data infrastructure and/or AI certifications by recognised providers
