As part of our Engineering team youd play a hands-on role in keeping our fleet moving. This is a dual-skilled position that brings together train maintenance and depot driving giving you real variety and a clear sense of purpose every time you step onto the depot. Whether youre fault-finding servicing or moving units to keep the plan on track your work directly supports millions of journeys across the North.

You dont need previous train driving experience. Well train you from the ground up combining classroom learning with practical on-site experience to help you build a long-term career in rail engineering.

What youll be doing

• Carrying out maintenance servicing inspections and fault-finding on our trains making sure theyre safe and ready for service.
• Preparing units for daily operation including cleaning checks and supporting planned maintenance activities.
• Safely moving and positioning trains around the maintenance depot to support the engineering plan.
• Working closely with colleagues across Engineering to maintain traction and rolling stock to the highest standards.
• Following all safety rules procedures and working instructions while keeping a clean secure and well-organised working environment.
• Working flexibly across shifts including nights and weekends.

About you

Engineering know-how focus and the right attitude thats what matters here.

Youll bring:

• An NVQ Level 3 qualification in Engineering with hands-on experience of mechanical and electrical systems.
• The ability to fault-find and troubleshoot in a fast-paced technical environment.
• A strong safety mindset with the focus and concentration needed for a safety critical role.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing maintenance and operational demands.
• Clear communication skills and a calm team-first approach even under pressure.
• The motivation to lead by example and take pride in high-quality work.
• A commitment to completing our full train driver training programme and staying fully compliant.
• No previous train driving experience is needed. Youll begin with around six weeks of classroom-based training in Leeds or Manchester followed by practical training at your depot.

Please note: This is a safety-critical role and is subject to Rail Safety & Standards Board (RSSB) regulations. You must meet the following criteria or your application will be automatically rejected:

• You live within a 45-minute car journey of the station youll work from.
• Youre at least 18 years old at the time of application.
• You can pass a safety-critical medical including drugs and alcohol screening.
• You do not have defective colour vision.
