JOB OPPORTUNITY

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Police Accountability Investigator! In this role you will have the opportunity to serve as an independent investigator of civilian complaints against members of the Police Department or against police policy or practices and managing/staffing the Hearing Panel process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge skills and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major course work in law or public administration or a closely related field and two (2) years of analytical investigative and/or legal-related experience in a public agency or similar setting.


Experience which will have provided a familiarity with law enforcement procedures and a skill in dealing with members of various ethnic and socio-economic groups is desirable. Some legal education and/or training sufficient to perform the requirements of this classification is required. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year-for- year basis.

SPECIALSTATUS

This classification is excluded from the competitive service and the incumbent employed will be employed as an AT-WILL employee.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business maintenance of a valid California drivers license and a satisfactory driving record is required. Must be willing to conduct off-hours interviews and attend off-hours meetings.

EXAM PROCESS


The exam process will include but may not be limited to:

  1. Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date)
  2. Oral Board (with written exercise) Tentative date February 17 and /or 18 2026.
Tests may consist of any combination of written oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include but are not necessarily limited to typing math reading writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency or any other job-related knowledge skill ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may without notice change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
