Description of Work

The Grain Moisture Program is responsible for providing inspection of grain moisture meters throughout the state determining their accuracy of reading the moisture content of grains such as corn soybeans and wheat. The moisture content is reflected in the price paid to the producer and in some cases can result in the product not being accepted at all.

This position involves a combination of both fieldwork and laboratory work. The fieldwork will be conducted in the 32 counties listed. The laboratory work will be completed at the Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center in Raleigh NC. This position requires extensive driving daily within the assigned territory. Duties include making moisture and test weight standards cleaning grain samples and maintaining laboratory testing equipment. The inspector will be responsible for communicating with local grain facilities and customers to arrange sample collections at the time of addition the inspector will also perform inspections of balances grain charts and thermometers used at these businesses. This employee will also perform scale inspections at retail locations within their territory between seasons.

This employee will be issued a state-owned vehicle and will be required to complete daily checks and schedule preventative maintenance.

A pre-employment fitness for duty test will be conducted at the expense of the Standards Division.

A math test will be administered as part of the interview process.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $41655 - $44000

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with wholesalers retailers and other persons engaged in the use and operation of weighing and measuring devices that are being regulated.
  • Must be able to communicate both in oral and written form.
  • Must be able to interpret data to recognize trends and failures and to use this information to make regulatory decisions. Ability to work independently manage supply inventories develop and maintain their inspection schedule and be competent in basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds.
  • Must have possession of a valid drivers license.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related work experience in the gas and oil industry or scale industry or grain industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
