We are seeking a Senior Associate/Director to join our newly established Tax Controversy & Disputes legal team. This is an opportunity to play a key role in a growing practice advising a diverse client base including multinationals the Top 5000 taxpayer population and high net wealth individuals on complex domestic and cross border taxation matters.
The role will involve:
- Managing complex ATO reviews and audits
- Preparing objections and briefing counsel
- Advising on ATO Risk Reviews Audits and Independent Reviews
- When required preparation for and the conduct of taxation appeals in the Tribunal and Federal Court
- Providing relevant targeted legal advice across taxation and administrative law issues arising on matters.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills through varied client engagements
You will collaborate with colleagues across Australia working nationally with Partners and team members in all jurisdictions. Many matters also involve multidisciplinary collaboration with our broader specialist teams. You will have the opportunity to develop strong relationships with clients and grow both legal and non-legal skills in a high-performing and supportive environment.

- Previous (8 years plus) experience tax controversy and disputes corporate tax international tax tax law in either a large professional services firm a law firm or the Australian Taxation Office.
- To be eligible for this role you must have a law degree and relevant Australian legal experience.
- Ability to deliver fully integrated solutions and make decisions to best meet client needs collaborating as required.
- Experience in ATO information gathering processes using market-based discovery tools for tax audits and reviews and tax litigation is very desirable.
- Experience in preparation of submissions to the ATO including position paper responses penalty papers and evidentiary reviews is also desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in the delivery of quality services to clients.
- Strong interpersonal and project management skills.
- An ability to motivate and work as part of a high-performing team to achieve outcomes.
- You enjoy working in the detail with a proactive attitude towards accuracy and deadlines.
- Ability to develop strong client and target relationships and be proactive in deepening those relationships.
- Commitment to support firm and practice training by providing knowledge for the development and delivery of training.
