The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join the talented Economics group within the Regulatory Enhancement Branch. Our team is responsible for economic analysis data management economic modeling regulatory impact assessments (RIAs) and socio-economic impact assessments (SEIAs).

This role offers an excellent development opportunity with hands-on experience evaluating the economic environmental and social impacts of energy projects. You will support work that ensures the safe environmentally responsible development of Albertas energy resources while helping to enhance the competitiveness of the provinces energy industry.You will join a collaborative team that values worklife balance and flexible schedules. Working alongside experienced economist mentors you will contribute to shaping Albertas energy future.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Collaborate with AER experts to gather and compile data for Regulatory Impact Assessments (RIAs) and support economists in modeling and presenting estimated regulatory impacts.

  • Report write and present historical data and modeled scenarios with guidance from senior staff. Learn and use in-house models to assess social environmental and economic impacts of future resource development.

  • Assistin developing updating andmaintainingroutine economic and forecasting models. Verify model assumptions to ensure accuracy and defensibility.

  • Support senior staff in responding to routine and complex inquiries related to energy information and RIAs.

  • Gather update andmaintainhigh-quality energy environmental social and economic data for modeling forecasting and RIAs.

  • Participate in preparing briefing notes and presentation materials for senior leadership.

Whatwerelooking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in aBachelorsprogram in Economics Public Policy Sociology Indigenous Studies Business or a related field.

  • Solid understanding of Econometrics and Statistics.

  • Strongproficiencywith the Microsoft Office suite is preferred.

  • Familiarity with model building and costbenefit analysis is an asset.

  • Industry knowledge and familiarity with evaluating environmental social and economic impacts are preferred.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
