THE POSITION
The Long-Range Planning Division within the Community Development Department is hiring a part-time General Intern to support and perform various duties in planning policy graphic design community engagement/organizing healthy food initiatives/urban agriculture. The General Intern will work alongside a team contribute to a community planning project related to topics such as elementary school education climate change and sustainability to activate green spaces in communities. This role will provide an opportunity to develop professional skills support project management tasks and collaborative partnerships. This position is funded by a grant - Californians For All Youth Service Corps Program. The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge or will be eager to learn about urban farming community organizing farm/action plan development healthy food initiatives and collaborative partnerships. They will have willingness to take direction and show initiative in completing tasks. Prior (lived) experience or knowledge of Leataata Floyd Elementary School and surrounding community (West Broadway) (Seavey Circle) SHRA public housing (Alder Grove/Marina Vista row housing) Mercy Housing (Land Park Woods apartments) is a plus but not required.
The General Intern classification is a City-wide classification designed to provide access to workforce services and employment opportunities. Duties performed will vary in scope of activity depending on the assigned department.Some positions may include a rotation (of duties) as the intern may be trained on more than one focus area depending on the needs of the division/department.
Participants may only work in this classification in a part-time or full-time status for up to one calendar year. Incumbents will be limited-term employees; no regular permanent appointments will be made to this classification. General Interns will be used as a learning and development opportunity to help applicants enter gain experience and succeed in the workforce and will not be used in lieu of hiring regular City employees.
General Interns may be paid the following hourly rates depending on their work experience:

Recruitment Incentive
Upon successful completion of 80 hours of work the City may pay eligible employees a lump sum amount of $250.
Retention Incentive
Upon successful completion of 320 hours of work the City shall pay eligible employees a lump sum amount of $500.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis classification is distinguished from the Student Trainee and Graduate Trainee classifications in that this program does not require the incumbent to be enrolled in an academic program in any capacity. It is distinguished from the Mayor Council Intern classification in that it is a citywide classification.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
Immediate supervision may be provided by higher-level departmental or division personnel. General Interns may provide functional supervision to General Interns.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending upon assignment typical duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Perform a variety of fundamental duties in various divisions of the employing department.
- Provide basic assistance in research projects special reports data collection and programmatic problem-solving.
- Gathercompiletabulateandreportstatisticaldata.
- Acquire working knowledge of department practices procedures equipment andorganizational systems.
- Respond to community inquires and complaints.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Simple research and statistical methods.
- Basic knowledge of case management methods.
- English usage spelling and punctuation.
Ability to:
- Communicateeffectivelybothorallyandinwriting.
- Collect compile analyze and interpret statistical data.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees the general public and others contacted in the course of work.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Must be 16 years of age or older. Beginning January 1 2027 candidates must be at least 18 years of age to qualify for this program.
