SUMMARY/PURPOSE
To assist the Engineering Division by performing manual and semi-skilled work in assigned areas including surveying transportation engineering and/or utility engineering.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
For both one-of-a-kind and repetitive tasks the supervisor makes specific assignments that are accompanied by clear detailed and specific instructions. Incumbents work as instructed and consult with the supervisor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Assist in locating survey points and tracer wires.
2. Assist construction staking including recording survey field notes and related data.
3. Operate and maintain survey and GPS equipment or scanner as assigned.
4. Process survey information including computerized data entry work.
5. Assist in creating plans maps and charts manually or using a computer-aided design (CAD) system or Geographic Information System (GIS).
6. Monitor and inspect small construction projects for conformance and report problems to supervisor.
7. Maintain a daily log of construction activities.
8. Document construction quantities and assist with quality control tests on construction materials.
9. Perform traffic counting work as assigned.
10. Enter traffic count data in databases and assist in analyzing traffic count data as assigned.
11. Be an effective team member by exhibiting self-motivation supporting other employees in handling tasks interacting effectively and respectfully with others showing a desire to contribute to the team effort accepting assignments willingly and completing tasks within agreed upon timelines.
12. Other duties may be assigned.

2. License Requirements
A. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D drivers license or privilege.
3. Education & Experience Preferred Requirements
A. Student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university civil engineering or related civil engineering technology program (all experience levels encouraged to apply).
Knowledge Requirements
A. Knowledge of algebra geometry and trigonometry.
B. Knowledge of general engineering principles and practices.
C. Knowledge of the principles of drafting.
D. Knowledge of applicable safety principles and practices.
Ability Requirements
A. Ability to operate personal computers for the purposes of creating reports preparing spreadsheets and/or entering data in to databases.
B. Ability to perform supervised drafting work with ability to use GIS and CAD systems desirable.
C. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
D. Ability to create and maintain a positive working environment that welcomes diversity ensures cooperation and promotes respect by sharing expertise with team members fostering safe work practices and developing trusting work relationships.
Physical Ability Requirements
A. Ability to transport oneself to from and around worksites.
B. Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions.
C. Ability to walk for long distances.
D. Ability to transport and erect survey and traffic counting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
E. Ability to use a shovel to excavate ground and locate survey points and tracer wires.
F. Ability to attend work on a regular basis including scheduled evenings weekends and/or holidays.Selection Process Information
