The Opportunity
We are seeking a Hydraulics and Capacity Engineer or Technologist to support operational capacity management for South Bows crude oil pipelines. This role requires an advanced ability to collaborate with and influence decisions with multiple stakeholders including scheduling control center work management field operations asset management SCADA and engineering teams. The successful candidate will manage the monthly capacity of South Bows assets while minimizing operating costs.
What youll do
Understand and manage the capacity and variable operating costs of our pipelines
Collaborate with the Asset Management and Commercial Operations teams to set/change target rates to ensure monthly commitments are met
Steady-State Hydraulic Analysis
Perform steady-state hydraulic analysis and interface with the Liquids Pipeline Control Centre (LPCC) to ensure Drag Reducing Agent (DRA) injection parameters are optimized
Review hydraulic bottlenecks and adjustment of the DRA injection coefficients
Set daily flow rate targets and update throughout the month based on operational and market conditions
Complete hydraulic analysis for both scheduled maintenance and unscheduled outages to quantify the capacity impact and the cost of mitigation with DRA; make decisions on the path forward by collaborating with internal stakeholders
Participate in evaluating risk/costs/benefits of taking an unplanned capacity impact
Assist with monitoring temperature limits on the system to manage stress
Provide oversight of DRA deliveries to the field
Outage Management and Optimization
Key stakeholder during planned pipeline outages point of contact for coordination with LPCC and Field Operations
Coordinate the batch requirements and bypass schedules for tool runs with Oil Scheduling
Review outage plans provided by the Liquids Work Management Team to evaluate opportunities for optimization
Review and approve Operational Notifications (ON) for outages on the system communicate requirements to LPCC utilizing the Daily Operations Plan (DOP)
Capacity Forecasting
Assist in preparing monthly available capacity forecasting for the Commercial team before Nominations
Assist in the preparation and presentation of the monthly updates to the one-year forecast
Assist in the preparation of the commercial capacity forecast (2-3 year look ahead) during budgetary cycles and variable toll preparation
Prepare reporting on system performance metrics as required
Minimum Qualifications
4 years of related experience in the oil and gas industry
Technical credentials one of the following: Engineering degree Bachelors (Science Computer Science etc.) Engineering Technologist diploma Bachelors in a related field Journeyperson certification
Preferred Qualifications
General understanding of fluid dynamics/hydraulics
Experience using Power BI and/or Python
Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer in good standing
Demonstrated ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment with continuously changing priorities
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
Proven ability to deliver practical technical solutions to complex ambiguous problems.
Demonstrated strength in troubleshooting and clearly communicating technical issues to a wide range of stakeholders.
Self-motivated/results driven mentality
This position requires candidates to:
Have current valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada and US)
Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments meetings or training (estimated up 10% of work schedule)
Be part of an on-call rotation and provide emergency support as required
Successfully complete pre-employment Bankruptcy Credit Civil and Criminal background checks
