Job Summary

AECOMs Structural Bridge Engineering Practice is seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer with a passion for bridge design/structural engineering. In this role the ideal candidate will act as a Structures Design Lead on a variety of exciting often highly visible pursuits and projects.  The individual will have overall responsibility for all structural aspects of these projects and inter-discipline coordination of all technical issues with other discipline leads from initial design through technical support during the construction phase. As part of our Greater Pennsylvania Area (GPA) we have several offices which include: Philadelphia PA Conshohocken PA Mechanicsburg PA Pittsburgh PA and Morgantown WV. The Senior Bridge Engineer is a hybrid role working 2 days from one of these AECOM GPA offices and 3 days remotely each week.

 

AECOMs GPA Bridge Engineering Practice works on projects throughout North America. These projects are delivered across many clients via various delivery methods. This includes steel and concrete bridges and other transportation structures such as walls and sign structures that are critical to our nations transportation network and vital to local communities. These projects can include: vehicular pedestrian light-rail transit and freight rail bridges; stationary and movable bridges. Our Bridge Engineers perform evaluation and design for rehabilitation and replacement of bridges.

 

The responsibilities of the Senior Bridge Engineer position include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all structural engineering technical aspects of pursuits and projects with other disciplines and in support of the Project/Design Manager.
  • Ensure the structural design is completed in accordance with the contract guidelines and design documents.
  • Establish structural scope work plan and work schedule in support of the Project Manager.
  • Lead all elements of conceptual preliminary and detailed final design of new bridges and rehabilitation or reconstruction of existing bridges.
  • Provide technical guidance and perform quality control reviews of design calculations drawings and other contract documents.
  • Prepare and/or guide the development of technical specifications and construction cost estimates.
  • Manage groups of engineers designers and/or specialists towards development of structural design documents and contract deliverables with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Assure conformance with contractual obligations by ensuring that design documents are reviewed and approved prior to release to the client.
  • Train mentor and develop staff and support career growth opportunities for staff.
  •  Support marketing coordination and proposal preparation. Participate in proposal interviews.
  • Ensure that QA/QC procedures are being implemented and ensure the technical quality of deliverables. Lead responses to clients comments on structural design elements of the deliverables.
  • Anticipate potential budget and schedule impacts and initiate plans for alternative actions.
  • Incorporate innovation in design and delivery.

 

An example of a high-profile project that our Greater Pennsylvania Area structures group has recently designed includes:

 

Schuylkill Banks Trail Extension (Christian Street to Grays Ferry Crescent) Philadelphia PA

       This project involved the planning and design of an 18-span 1820-foot long pedestrian bridge over and along the east bank of the Schuylkill River.  The bridge includes 15 prestressed concrete PA Bulb-Tee Beam approach spans and a three-span cable-stayed main span. Construction was completed in May 2025 and the structure is now open to and being enjoyed by the public. This project was a successor project to our award-winning Schuylkill Banks Trail Boardwalk (Schuylkill Boardwalk) Project which was constructed in 2013 another pedestrian bridge project that has brought transformational change to the Schuylkill Banks Trail the City of Philadelphia and the residents of Philadelphia and its surrounding areas.

Ongoing projects:

Our structures group is currently working on multiple major bridge and bridge corridor replacement projects across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania one of which includes:

SR 0080 17M Total Reconstruction Monroe County PennDOT District 5-0

       This project involves the total reconstruction of approximately 4 miles of Interstate 80 (I-80) in Stroudsburg PA. The project includes the reconfiguration of four interchanges and widening of the highway to accommodate six lanes of traffic. The project involves the replacement of twenty-two bridges and culverts the addition of fifty retaining walls thirty sign structures and six sound barriers. Several structures involve the use of curved steel I-girders integral pier caps and steel straddle bents. The project is currently in design and is anticipated to be let in three contracts between 2026 and 2029.

 


Qualifications :

Minimum:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and six years of relevant experience in transportation structures or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Professional Engineer (PE) 
  • Valid U.S. Drivers License and as a condition of employment must pass AECOMs Motor Vehicle Records Review

Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in Structural Engineering
  • Twenty (20) or more years of experience with structural bridge design
  • Project experience with PennDOT Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and/or other State DOTs
  • Willing to obtain PE License reciprocity in the jurisdiction/s of the projects
  • Proficiency with CAD and similar computer software
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis using CSiBridge or other bridge FE analysis software
  • Experience in BIM delivery and/or modeling using Bentley Open Bridge Modeler (OBM) or other modeling software
  • Experience with alternative delivery methods or projects with early contractor involvement
