This posting creates a pool of candidates for future positions that may become available.

JOB SUMMARY
Collaborates with students parents and other agencies to address student success and academic achievement. After the school-based intervention has been implemented and additional assistance is still needed the case may be referred to the Pupil Personnel Worker. Duties include working with school personnel to improve student attendance by making referrals to Juvenile Justice the States Attorneys Office and processing cases to District Court. Contacts community agencies consults with school personnel and makes home visits. Assists schools to investigate residency answers questions related to custody and assists with enrollment of kinship hardship and homeless students. Other duties may include working with Section 504 monitoring students enrolled under special circumstances and assisting caregivers to access resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Informs students their parents school staff and other groups regarding availability and scope of pupil personnel services.
  • Consults with school personnel to resolve custody residency and attendance issues.
  • Contacts community agencies such as Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) and Department of Social Services (DSS) to access resources for students and families.
  • Insures that students who are involved in the Juvenile Justice system are appropriately placed in school.
  • Visits students home and community facilities to resolve the reason for the referral to Pupil Services.
  • Works with homeless students and their parents to insure their rights under the McKinney Vento Act are upheld and to provide resources as needed.
  • Collaborates with the States Attorneys office for attendance cases being prosecuted in District Court.
  • Assists schools in resolution of residency and custody. Assists school personnel to interpret Board of Education Policies.
  • Writes reports to the school superintendent community agencies and resource personnel to document PPW involvement and impact and the resolution of cases.
  • Speaks to faculties P.T.A.s etc. on a variety of topics as requested by principal or directors on topics such as how to improve your childs attendance homeless issues child abuse suicide etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Masters Degree in Pupil Personnel or related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required; and
  • Other: Completion of three (3) semester hours of State-approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits in special education coursework required.

Experience

  • Three (3) years successful teaching experience or releated expereince required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in both written and verbal forms.
  • Awareness of sensitivity to and knowledge in facilitating the personal and educational goals of a multicultural student population.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a variety of racial/ethnic groups and diverse populations.
  • Experience in providing outreach to diverse communities to garner support and resources to support student achievement social skill and character development inside and outside of school.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing Microsoft Office Suite -Word Excel Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses certifications and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Pupil Personnel Worker Certification issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for educator certificate/license issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Drivers License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required;
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

Driving Requirements

  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
  • Personal Vehicle
