Job Summary

Inclusion Support Worker Out of School Care Program

Wage: $23.75 /hour

Location:Victoria BC

Work Schedule:

  • Funding is provided for this role and is contingent on the enrollment in the program until end of June 2026: Scheduling should allow up to 5 hours/week on Tuesday and Thursday Afternoons (2:30-5:30pm)

  • School Year (January to June 2026): This includes Pro D Days and the potential to receive more hours based on approve funding for Spring and Summer Break Camps.

Position Overview

Under the direction of the OSC Manager Coordinator and OSC Team Leads this role is responsible for the 2:1 Support role in our Afterschool Child Care Program.

Supporting leadership team in writing and maintaining care plans helping the children be included in day-to-day activities and working with the children to develop strategies for expressing emotions and needs and to foster positive peer relationships and friendships. The role also includes providing direction to other staff on how to best support the success of the childs inclusion and being the first point of contact for parent/guardian check-ins questions and concerns.

This position is contingent on funding from VIHA under the Supportive Child Development Programs.

Responsibilities

Programming:

  • Uses positive behavioural guidance strategies to develop a trust-based relationship with the children.

  • Designs supportive environments.

  • Utilizes effective environmental arrangements to encourage social interactions.

  • Provides instruction to aid in the development of social skills.

  • Promotes identification and labelling of emotions in self and others.

  • Explores the nature of feelings and the appropriate ways they can be expressed.

  • Promotes the childs individualized emotional regulation that will enhance positive social interactions within the classroom.

  • Supports in the creation of care and safety plans in consultation with the program Team Leads families and professionals to best support the child.

  • Follows instructions given by Supportive Child Care Consultants from VIHA.

Provides instruction to other childcare staff if needed by:

  • Providing support and direction to staff regarding the childs development.

  • Ensuring staff are following appropriate behaviour and guidance strategies with the child for consistency.

Ensure the childs environment is healthy and safe:

  • Follow licensing requirements.

  • Helps to designs supportive emergent and inclusive environments.

  • Follow the centres procedures for administering medications and maintaining health records.

  • Report all accidents injuries and illnesses to the coordinator or manager promptly.

  • Monitor the environment for hazards.

  • Attend to childrens physical needs such as toileting and eating as promptly as possible.

  • Report all incidents of child abuse or neglect to the leadership team and follow centre procedure.

  • Release children only to authorized persons and make sure to check ID and files for any persons that you have not met beforehand.

  • Assists with daily cleaning and sanitizing.


Contribute to the ongoing operations of the centre:

  • Carry out the responsibilities as assigned.

  • Attend regular staff meetings.

  • Participate in performance review process.

  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality and actively communicate to leadership team when going to be absent or late.

  • Work collaboratively with other staff who are also working in the shared spaces.

Ensure positive communication with families:

  • Discuss the programs daily events and the childs daily progress with families.

  • Point of contact for parents and guardians.

  • Builds and maintains professional working relationships with parents/guardians.

Qualifications/Assets:

  • Responsible Adult certification in BC required Valid BC ECE an asset.

  • Experience working directly with children aged 5-11.

  • First Aid Certified required.

  • Experience working with children with autism ADHD and children facing conditions of risk.

  • Ability to take responsibility for the position responsibilities identified above including identifying where you will require additional training or external assistance to succeed.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and build relationships of trust including with people with different identities and life experiences from you.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others including problem solving delegating coaching conflict resolution and other interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledgeable or familiar with positive behaviour support strategies.

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training an asset.

  • Familiar with the Community Care and Assisted Living Acts Child Care Licensing Regulations.

  • Experience with and an understanding of the importance of client confidentiality.

  • Professional responsive with a positive work attitude.

  • Commitment to justice equity diversity decolonization and inclusion including the ability to appreciate diversity different opinions lived experiences backgrounds and personality types.

Working Conditions:

  • Youll work in a diverse fast-paced environment that demands clear respectful communication and a willingness to listen with curiosity.

  • Shared spaces and furniture require occasional physical effort including lifting items up to 50 lbs (chairs tables mats etc.).

  • The centre can be busy and noisy reflecting its role as a vibrant community hub.

  • As a public facility you may encounter individuals or families in crisis; youll follow established protocols and safety procedures when providing support or interventions.

Unionized Position

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) bargaining unit. We are currently in the process of negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.

Please note that following the ratification of the collective agreement union dues will be deducted from employees pay in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective agreement and BCGEU policies.
