Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

The Metra Police Department serves and protects commuters using the Metra system and Metras property. The mission of the Metra Police is to safeguard the lives and property of the people they serve to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety. Metra Police work to expedite issues with the commuting public and handle vehicle accidents and trespasser incidents on Metra railroad and property. Metra Police actively engage and work with first responders as well as local state and federal agencies during service disruptions and partner with these agencies on security planning. Their work ensures the safety of Metras passengers and employees and reduces train delays.

Reporting directly to the Captain of Detectivesor designee the Detective will conduct crime investigations and perform proactive policing of specialized criminal activity. Conduct death investigations; victim/witness interviews in criminal cases; locate witnesses documents and information; identify collect and preserve physical evidence prepares reports and testifies in court; develop use and maintain informants and information resources; perform sworn law enforcement duties and/or other related duties as required. Collaborate with other members of the agency and department as well as law enforcement officials at all levels of local county state and federal agencies. Write thorough and detailed reports throughout an investigation so as to update superiors and provide key details to court officials. Testify competently in trials and other proceedings. Represent the Metra Police at community groups school programs crime prevention events and/or other events & activities as required by the Chief of Police. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act not the Social Security Administration.

  1. Must have a Bachelors degree in a Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice degree or in lieu of specified degree a combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four years as a law enforcement officer.
  2. In addition to #1 must have ten years of full-time experience as a law enforcement officer including five years of investigative experience.
  3. Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of criminal investigations prosecution procedures and evidence processing.
  4. Knowledge of emergency management and counter-terrorism operations.
  5. Knowledge of applicable laws codes and ordinances.
  6. Must be able to analyze complex problems and develop appropriate and effective solutions and alternatives.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to testify in court or other hearings.
  8. Must be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Illinois or able to obtain a waiver from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board for out of state training within 90 days.
  9. Must be certified or able to attain CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  10. Must be able to meet the annual minimum firearms qualifications as required by Illinois State law within 15 days of hire.
  11. Must be certified or able to attain certification as an Illinois Lead Homicide Investigator within 180 days of hire.
  12. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  13. Ability to stand walk and/or sit for extended periods of time.
  14. Hearing/Visual acuity far/near depth perception field of vision color vision.
  15. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat cold rain and snow.
  16. Ability to climb aboard train locomotives rail cars and related railroad equipment while wearing uniformed police equipment.
  17. Ability to fire a weapon on duty is required.
  18. Ability to perform lifesaving procedures.
  19. Ability to drive a police vehicle under emergency conditions.
  20. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  21. Must be willing to travel within and outside of Metras 6-county region. Out of state travel as required to conduct investigative follow-up attend meetings conferences training.
  22. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day 7 days/week 365 days/year including weekends and holidays.
