Job Summary

Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.

REQUIRED:California Motor Vehicle Class C Drivers License with 3 years clean driving record. A clean driving record consists of no violations within 3 years of applying.

MUST BE ATTACHED TO RESUME TAB:Official DMV driver license history report showing a clean driving record for the last three years.Please note all attachments must be submitted under the RESUME tab which can only accept one (1) file. Applicants cannot make modifications to their applications once they have been submitted.Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing status of their license at the time of application AND at time of hire.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION


THE AGENCY

The mission of Public Works is to enhance the quality of life for the people of Alameda County by providing a safe well-maintained and lasting public works infrastructure through accessible responsive and effective services. Public services provided by the Alameda County Public Works Agency include flood control planning and design storm water pollution control transportation planning and design roadway and flood control maintenance and inspection and construction and building inspections.

The goals of the Agency are to keep roads safe and well maintained provide the highest level of flood protection provide service levels that optimize infrastructure life cycles minimize deferred maintenance ensure that development and construction adhere to applicable State and County rules optimize disaster preparedness response and recover ensure that the Agencys operations and services minimize negative impacts on the environment and sustain and advance County and Agency programs through a vital business and administrative support system.

Under general supervision to install maintain and repair all types of traffic signals and any other electronic or electric traffic control devices; and to do related work as required.

The Traffic Signal Technician is the journey-level position responsible for the installation maintenance and repairs of traffic signals and other electronic or electrical traffic control devices. It is distinguished from the next higher- level classification of Traffic Signal Supervisor in that the latter has overall supervision responsibility over Traffic Signal Technicians.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications the ideal candidate for Traffic Signal Technician in Alameda County Public Works Agency will possess:

  • In-depth knowledge of Electric and Electronic theories.
  • Demonstrated experience with tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.
  • Proven safety practices in the workplace.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

TO QUALIFY FOR THE COMPETITIVE ASSESSMENT PROCESS YOU MUST MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS BY FULFILLING ONE OF THE PATTERNS LISTED BELOW (I or II).

EITHER I
Experience: The equivalent of two years full-time experience as a Traffic Signal Technician Trainee in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorneys Office Hospital Authority and the Consolidated Courts.)

OR II
Education: Graduation from an accredited electrical or electronic trade school. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

And
Experience: The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the installation maintenance and repair of electric and electronic traffic control devices.

License:Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Drivers License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
Electrical and electronic theory.
Tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
Traffic signal installation inspection techniques and procedures.
Schematics plans and specifications.
Traffic Safety Regulations.
Safe work practices.

Ability to:
Follow written and oral instructions.
Work alone with minimal supervision.
Work at heights.
Work on live electrical equipment.
Distinguish colors.
Lift 100 lbs. correctly.
Operate lift vehicle.
Repair and test electronic equipment.
Read and interpret plans and specifications.
Supervise the installation of traffic signal systems.
Operate and maintain a variety of electric and electronic measuring devices.
Inspect electrical and electronic portions of traffic signal systems installed by private contractors.

Special Working Condition:

Subject to 24-hour call out.
Work in all weather conditions.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  1. A review of applicants application andsupplemental questionnaireto verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. An oral examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates final examination score. The oral examination may be administered virtually and may contain situational exercises.

Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
