Job Overview:
The Special Education Unit is responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of special education services to over 19000 Montana children with disabilities. This supervision includes ultimate responsibility for the policies and procedures interagency coordination and providing guidance and support for the implementation of early childhood education programs along with rules regarding the development and implementation of services for students identified as Gifted and Talented and necessary for distribution of substantial (over $130 million biennial) state and federal special education dollars the authority to impose sanctions including the withholding of funds and making recommendations to the Board of Public Education for removing school accreditation of public schools and agencies not in alignment with state and federal regulations. The Unit is also responsible for the provision of services to children with disabilities in the event the public school or state agency refuses or is unable to provide services consistent with the requirements of state and federal laws. Under federal law it is the states supervisory responsibility to guarantee that each child with disabilities ages 3 through 18 inclusive residing in the state and enrolled in a public school state-operated or state-supported school receives a free and appropriate public education.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Bachelors degree in education preferably in Special Education.

Three years experience in education learning professional development research design and practice curriculum and classroom assessment development instructional practices or related arears.

Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.
