The Role

An exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to manage the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) academic research training and development programme. The post holder works across organisational and professional boundaries strengthening capacity building and training in SPHR.

The Training Manager coordinates a variety of training opportunities for researchers at all levels from undergraduate interns to post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers to support the next generation of researchers in public health.

Educated to degree level you will have excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a range of different stakeholders and at different levels. You will have experience of event organisation and workshop development using your initiative and managing projects to defined deliverables and meeting audit and reporting requirements.

This role is offered on a full-time basis (requests for part time >0.8fte will be considered) and is fixed term to March 2029.

Key accountabilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for all NIHR SPHR-related training enquiries and build up a knowledge base of local and national training priorities
  • Organise regular project update meetings maintaining appropriate communication with all stakeholders.
  • Provide a mechanism for the early identification of potential issues and develop solutions along with the School Manager ACDL and wider member and research programme leads
  • Manage training activity and monitor progress for all NIHR SPHR trainees within the School
  • As directed by the School Manager and SPHR ACDL plan and coordinate a programme of workshops seminars and conferences focused on training and career development
  • Prepare progress reports success case studies and other performance indicators across the training remit
  • Work with colleagues in other parts of NIHR infrastructure including the NIHR Academy NIHR ARCs and the other two NIHR Schools to develop synergy joint working and shared activity that will support the delivery of the NIHR SPHR Business Plan and ACD Strategy
  • Create and manage a network of training contacts and actively promote local and national training opportunities
  • Working with the School Manager and Communications Manager make regular updates to the training section of the NIHR SPHR website and manage associated training communications through social media and publicity material
  • Take responsibility for identifying own learning needs including identifying appropriate courses to ensure up to date knowledge of NIHR infrastructure and the associated national public health research agenda
  • Manage a complex network of relationships across the 9 members of NIHR SPHR
  • Support the wider delivery of the NIHR SPHR as directed by the SPHR Director Academic Career Development Lead and School Manager
  • Serve as a member of the central support team in SPHR and play a role in operationalising its overall strategy
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role
