Long Term Substitute for School Assistant

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision to perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for instructional personnel; and to do other related work as required.

Qualifications:

1. High School diploma with passing score on ParaProfessional Assessment 48 college credits or an Associates degree.
2. Appropriate English usage punctuation spelling and grammar.
3. Routine record storage retrieval and management procedures.
4. Demonstrate an understanding patient and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups particularly those exhibiting specialized needs.
5. Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social behaviors.
6. Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
7. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
9. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
10. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.
2. May perform assist and/or train students in self-care and personal grooming to include such activities as undressing dressing teeth brushing toileting and diapering. May adjust braces walkers and wheelchairs. May push lift and transfer non-ambulatory students and assist students on and off buses. May assist students with feeding.
3. Work withindividual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow up learning and training activities.
4. Monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill practice and study activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.
5. Direct students into safe learning and play activities and functions and assist in shaping of appropriate social behaviors.
6. Assist in the management of acting-out student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques.
7. Assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instructional level of children.
8. Maintain a variety of records and files including confidential student records and medical information.
9. Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media and computer assisted instruction equipment and software programs.
10. Monitor and assist in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions.
11. Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly attractive and positive learning environment.
12. May participate in parent conferences and pupil instruction and training planning processes.
13. Provide a variety of skill building activities with children.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

PAY AND HOURS:
Pay and Hours: Thehourly pay is determined based upon degree level. The standard day is 7 hours.
