The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin Madison School of VeterinaryMedicine invites applications for a full-time position within the Small Animal Internal Medicine serviceat UW Veterinary Care. This position is available at the Assistant Associate or Full Professor level in the clinical track or tenure track tailored to the individual candidates qualifications and interests.
The new hire will join a collaborative SAIM team currently composed of four clinical track faculty. Inaddition to faculty the SAIM team includes 6 residents 12 rotating interns 4 certified veterinarytechnicians 1 veterinary assistant and 1 client care liaison. Clinical service responsibilities in UWVeterinary Care (UWVC) include providing high-quality patient care and hands-on training for
veterinary students interns and residents. Strong communication skills and a commitment toconsulting with referring veterinarians and clients are essential. SAIM manages approximately 2500cases annually out of the 27400 small animal patients seen each year at UWVC.
The SVM is a collegial collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certifiedexperts in allied services including anesthesia and pain management cardiology dentistry and oralsurgery dermatology diagnostic imaging internal medicine neurology medical and radiationoncology ophthalmology anatomic and clinical pathology primary care special species and softtissue and orthopedic surgery. Additionally the hospital has a dedicated LCSW who meets withclients and offers support groups.
In 2024 UWVC opened a new state-of-the-art hospital. SAIM now has access to an expansive suite of interventional radiology and endoscopy equipment including new Olympus flexible endoscopesStorz rigid and resectoscope systems Ho:YAG CO2 and diode lasers PET/CT imaging a dedicated
endoscopy/laparoscopy OR a vascular IR suite and standing videofluoroscopic swallow studycapabilities. We also offer extracorporeal therapies including intermittent hemodialysis ultrafiltration plasmapheresis and hemoperfusion jointly with the Emergency and Critical Care service. SAIM alsotreats 1-3 cats weekly with I-131 a service greatly valued by the community.
Clinical track faculty at the University of Wisconsin are expected to participate in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students interns and residents; participate in continuing education programs; and conduct basic science or clinical research that advances academic clinical practice.
The approximate distribution of effort is described below.
-Clinical responsibilities (45%): Clinical service to the SAIM section of UW Veterinary Care for up to 24 weeks a year; training and supervision of residents and interns; clinical teaching of 4th year veterinary students; supervision of training of residents in and performance of endoscopy and other interventional procedures.
-Non-clinical teaching responsibilities (20%): Didactic and laboratory course teaching in the preclinical curriculum is both asynchronous and synchronous totaling 15-20 hours dependent upon needs of the curriculum and applicant experience.
-Research responsibilities (25%): Contribute to and participate in basic or clinical research in the SAIM section including mentoring of house officers in research.
-Service responsibilities (10%): Involvement in committees at the Department School and University level along with involvement nationally at the professional committee level. Participate in continuing education programs for veterinary practitioners in Wisconsin and beyond.
