Education Coordinator
Position Overview
The Education Coordinator provides leadership and execution for the National Museum of Health and Medicines (NMHM) education tour outreach and volunteer programs. Working in close coordination with the Public Programs Manager and museum staff this role ensures delivery of high-quality mission-aligned educational experiences for diverse audiences both onsite and offsite.
Key Responsibilities
Develops implements and evaluates NMHM tour education outreach and volunteer programs.
Manages the docent and volunteer programs including recruiting interviewing training supervising evaluating performance and recognition.
Oversees daily tour scheduling tour requests docent assignments and visitor attendance data collection.
Coordinates and conducts guided tours special presentations and outreach programs for military civilian academic and community audiences.
Develops curriculum and interpretive materials to support exhibitions and public programs.
Serves as liaison between NMHM staff and external organizations requesting tours or outreach programs.
Coordinates staffing for tours special events and educational programs including Visitor Services Assistants.
Collaborates with Public Affairs staff on marketing and promotion of educational programs.
Participates in exhibition planning providing public- and docent-focused interpretation perspectives.
Supports museum ceremonies including military retirement and enlistment events.
Prepares reports metrics and documentation related to tours volunteers and outreach activities.
Opens and closes museum buildings as directed and works evenings weekends and holidays as required.
Required Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum 8 years of professional tour guiding and public program planning/execution.
Minimum 5 years of docent or volunteer management experience.
Demonstrated experience training and supervising staff and volunteers and working with diverse populations.
Education:
Bachelors degree in Science History Museum Studies or a related field.
Work Environment
Onsite at NMHM Silver Spring MD.
Requires occasional lifting and physical activity.
Evening weekend and holiday work required to support programs and events.
