Job Summary

We are growing our team and looking for Chamber Officers Kaitautoko Huinga Whareto join us as key members of the Chamber Operations Team supporting the wider House Services.

Mō te tūngaAbout the role:

The Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives is the politically independent secretariat of New Zealands legislature. We are seeking passionate individuals to support sittings of the House of Representatives.

Chamber Officers provide excellent customer-focused services for the Chamber lobbies and when requested other Office of the Clerk groups.

  • Customer Service and Support: Deliver excellent customer service by supporting the Speaker Presiding Officers the Clerk and responding to members requests. Assist Office of the Clerk staff with tasks such as delivering bills and tabling amendments.
  • Chamber Preparation and Packdown: Ensure the Chamber and lobbies are set up according to the team Run Sheet before each House Sitting. Distribute Parliamentary papers correctly prior to sittings ensure a thorough pack down after each sitting
  • Access Control: Ensure only authorised persons access the Chamber and lobbies as permitted under Standing Orders and Speakers Rulings.
  • Operational Support: Report maintenance issues and assist in emergency evacuations as directed.

We are seeking four on call casual Chamber Officers. As the purpose of this position is to support the operations of the House in sitting weeks the working hours if called on are focused around sitting hours: Tuesday & Wednesday 12.45pm 10.15pm Thursday 12.45pm 6.15pm.

Additional hours are worked for Extended Sittings or Urgency. The House sits for 28-weeks each year noting Parliament does not normally sit during school holidays.

  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to interact confidently with diverse people and cultures.
  • An interest in and respect for tikanga Māori with a willingness to learn and apply cultural practices in a professional setting.
  • Customer service experience or a natural aptitude for helping others.
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with MS Office software.
  • A positive attitude adaptability and eagerness to grow in a unique professional environment.

  • The expected salary range for this position is $58834 - $64349 per annum paid on an hourly rate due to this being a casual contract.
