JOB OPPORTUNITY

The City of Berkeley is accepting applications for a Senior Environmental Health Specialist! In this role as a California Registered Environmental Health Specialist you will serve as a technical expert within specialized program areas including food facilities pool/spa safety and body art facility plan reviews. You will lead the development and implementation of key policies and procedures while conducting investigations inspections and surveys to ensure rigorous enforcement of state and local environmental health laws.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge skills and abilities is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in environmental health or a related field which meets the specific minimum standards and qualifications for admission to examination as a registered Environmental Health Specialist under the applicable provision of California state law and three years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in a public health agency. Additional certificated coursework in a specialty area is highly desirable.

Other requirements: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California and possession of a valid California drivers license with a satisfactory driving record. Must be willing to work stand-by hours on an occasional basis.

In addition to the qualifications mentioned above the ideal candidate will have the necessary skills and abilities to serve as a lead resource and mentor to staff and should be comfortable handling complex regulatory enforcement and policy-related work.

Tests may consist of any combination of written oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include but are not necessarily limited to typing math reading writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency or any other job-related knowledge skill ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may without notice change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
