The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an undergraduate intern to perform as an active member of the Crop Improvement Team contributing under the purple corn project.
The position: This position will be based in HQ-Lima Peru and will report directly to the Crop Improvement Science Goal. The objective of this internship is to support and receive training in purple corn genetic analyses. The intern will report to the Associate Scientist leading this project.
Training activities:
- Support genomic data processing and quality assessment workflows.
- Assist in analyzing genetic diversity relatedness and population structure in a purple corn germplasm collection.
- Contribute to comparing different sampling and bulk-based strategies for genotype characterization.
- Generate clear summaries visualizations and reports for internal research teams.
- Participate in regular meetings document progress and support collaborative research activities.
Requirements
What are we looking for
- Student of biology genetics plant breeding bioinformatics computational biology or related fields.
- Familiarity with genomic datasets (VCF SNP matrices) and common population genetics analyses.
- Basic experience with R or Python for data analysis and visualization.
- Strong analytical skills attention to detail and ability to work with large datasets.
- Good communication skills and willingness to learn new tools and methods.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative research environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
- Flexible interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Available to work at least 30 hours per week.
