Job Summary

Position Overview

The METCO Director grades K-12 is responsible for the management and supervision of the Weston METCO program which includes a five member staff and about 160 students in grades K-12. The director reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning is responsible for the overall quality of the METCO program and gives the building principals support with family communications as addition the Director serves as the Field School Liaison and has responsibilities in the educational and developmental needs of the Boston resident students. About the Weston Public Schools

The Weston Public Schools enrolls approximately 2000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school district includes a high school for grades 9-12 a middle school for grades 6-8 an upper elementary school for grades 4-5 and two lower elementary schools for pre-kindergarten through grade 3. Since 1967 Weston has participated in METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) - a voluntary school integration program that places Boston residents in suburban schools. The Weston METCO program enrolls approximately 160 students (K-12).

Key Academic Liaison Responsibilities
  • Embrace the diversity of the Weston Public Schools by fostering an environment of respect and inclusion
  • Serves as liaison between student/teacher student/parent and student/family
  • Regularly consults and collaborates with principals teachers specialists and counselors to review the academic and social/emotional progress of students in the program and develop supports if needed
  • Actively participates in school data team and IST meetings and uses data to drive instructional/ social-emotional programs and initiatives in partnership with administrators
  • May provide direct student support in or out of the classroom in collaboration with principals teachers specialists and counselors
  • Serves as an advisor to Boston students and families on academic and social-emotional matters
  • Collaborates with the guidance department by providing ongoing observations of individual and group development of METCO students through snack groups lunch groups and other student meetings as necessary
  • Serves as a member of the 504/IEP team for all students on 504s/IEPs in the METCO program
  • Greets students upon arrival to school and assists students with dismissal and transition to buses when possible and appropriate
  • Participates in parent/teacher conferences when appropriate
  • Attends Field School staff meetings when possible
  • Provides parent education as needed
  • Collaborates with the Community Coordinator to support the Family Friends program
Key Leadership Responsibilities
  • Establishes and maintains a level of accessibility visibility and collaboration that contributes effectively to the sense of support and trust with students and among staff students and families
  • Sustains lines of communication and meets regularly with central office administrators and building principals in support of METCO students district-wide specifically:holds standing scheduled meetings with all principals at least once per month; holds 1:1 standing scheduled meetings with METCO liaisons at least twice per month; and holds regular meetings with the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning Director of Students Services and the Director of Equity and Professional Learning
  • Collaborates on the METCO budget and grant process with the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations;
  • Directs the placement process for students and their families;
  • Develops new initiatives and supports current programs in support of social/emotional and academic achievement goals;
  • Participates in support service teams district-wide;
  • Advocates for students and families in the METCO program;
  • Supervises in collaboration with the Director of Transportation and other administrators as needed in the transportation process for METCO students;
  • Organizes and oversees in collaboration with building-based liaisons after school and summer programming for METCO students;
  • Works with other level coordinators as appropriate to develop and coordinate transition programs (3rd to 4th 5th to 6th grade 8th to 9th grade) for METCO students;
  • Establishes events and programs in support of fund-raising activities and efforts;
  • Supports and attends as requested by the leadership the Weston/Boston METCO Parent Organization;
  • Produces an annual report of the Weston/METCO program;
  • Participates as a member of the MDA (METCO Directors Association);
  • Maintains a partnership with METCO Inc. for additional support;
  • Participates in Administrative Council meetings;
  • Supports and collaborates with district and school leaders including the Superintendent Assistant Superintendent Director of Equity and Professional Learning and Director of Student Services on district improvement in the areas of diversity equity and inclusion;
  • Leads professional development in areas of expertise;
  • Remain current and share with staff and others current research best practices and strategies for improving student achievement and success of all students in the program;
  • Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree Masters preferred in education psychology counseling social work or a related field.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts license as a Supervisor/Director by time of appointment
  • Minimum 5 years work experience in public schools
  • Excellent team building and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills - clear writer effective facilitator/public speaker
Compensation and Benefits

The METCO Director is a school-year role (189 days over a full school year) represented by the Weston Education Association and entitled to the same salary schedule as teachers and other professional addition to the base salary the METCO Director will be eligible for a leadership stipend between $14200 - $17750. The Weston Public Schools also offer a comprehensive benefits package including subsidized health insurance and participation in the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement System. Professional growth is ongoing in Weston and supported through multiple opportunities both internally and externally.
