Job Summary

The Position

Class Code 28174: Senior Nutrition Assistant

Transfer job postings are for County of Sacramento employees only.
In order to be qualified for a transfer:

1. You must meet the Minimum Qualifications of the new job.
2. The difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.

There are three different transfer types that you may qualify for: interdepartmental transfer interclass transfer and voluntary demotion. These different transfer types are defined as:

  • Interdepartmental transfer - a transfer in the same class from one County department to another.
  • Interclass transfer - a transfer from one job class to a different job addition the difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
  • Voluntary demotion - a transfer into a job class that pays less than 95% of your current class salary.
If you are requesting an interclass transfer or voluntary demotion either action is a change in class. Whether the change is a transfer or a demotion depends upon the difference between the maximum salary rates of the requested and incumbent classes. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.294 or the applicable labor agreement sets the criteria for determining the maximum difference allowed. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.228 defines demotion.

Under general supervision positions in the Senior Nutrition Assistant class provide nutrition education and assistance to qualifying participants. Incumbents interview and/or assess women infants and children to determine eligibility for the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program; assess nutritional status and provide education counseling referrals and other information to program participants.

  • Office procedures methods and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing spreadsheets databases and other specialized applications related to area of assignment

  • English usage spelling grammar and punctuation
  • Principles of effective customer service
  • Principles and techniques of assigning directing and reviewing work
  • Functions operations procedures and practices of the countys WIC program

  • The problems needs attitudes and behavior patterns of physically socially educationally or economically disabled or disadvantaged people
  • Proper food handling food safety and sanitation practices

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of the WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) certification or a bachelors degree in Nutrition.

AND

One year of full-time paid experience in a Womens Infants and Children (WIC) agency excluding clerical work.

Note: The word experience referenced in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Criminal History and Background Checks:
The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code section 1024.5 Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

License Requirement:
A valid California Driver License Class C or higher shall be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License or comply with state and federal requirements for utilization may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Child and Elder Abuse Reporting:
Persons selected for employment must as a condition of employment sign a statement agreeing to comply with Section 11166 and 11160 of the California Penal Code relating to child and elder abuse reporting.

Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to:
  • Perform extensive computer work for extended periods of time using a keyboard mouse and monitor.
  • Have sufficient vision to read small print.
  • Communicate with participants for prolonged periods of time throughout the day.
  • Weigh and measure infants/children.
  • Bend stoop kneel squat turn twist lift and reach at or above shoulder height.
  • Lift carry push or pull items up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:
Positions in this class may require the incumbent to:
  • Perform duties at alternative worksites and or high-crime areas of the community.
  • Work in a fast-paced high-stress environment.
  • Work with persons exhibiting signs of distress hostility anxiety frustration or irritation substance dependent or mentally ill persons and/or confrontational interpersonal situations.
  • Answer/make a high volume of telephone calls and/or work in a call center environment.
