This posting is for up to 2 hourly positions for up to 18 weeks

Do you have a passion for environmental stewardship This is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the health and sustainability of Strathcona Countys natural areas as a Vegetation Inspector. Youll be part of a dedicated team committed to improving biodiversity enhancing public spaces and ensuring our community thrives for generations to this role within the Recreation Parks and Culture division youll help protect our landscapes by inspecting and managing invasive plants across public lands.

This position offers varietyyou may work independently as part of a team or take on supervisory responsibilities with seasonal crews. Expect hands-on physical work with hours that can vary depending on weather and operational needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect public properties for noxious and prohibited noxious weeds as per the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations using GIS software.
  • Conduct broadleaf weed counts on sports fields parks and other green spaces.
  • Assist the Vegetation Sprayer to safely apply herbicides to control invasive plants in compliance with municipal provincial and federal legislation.
  • Carry out invasive plant management using manual and mechanical methods.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to residents offering guidance on invasive plant identification and management practices.
  • Support the Vegetation Management Technician by training coaching and supervising seasonal staff on the Invasive Plant Management Team.
  • Promote a safe working environment by ensuring all staff are performing their tasks safely by implementing safe work practices and procedures.
  • Use knowledge and train others in relation to OHS Regulation and Code and follow safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on the worksites.

Qualificationsand Skills:

  • High School diploma with two years related experience in an environmental field.
  • Attending or completed post-secondary education in an environmental field would be considered an asset.
  • Strong plant identification skills would be considered an of municipal provincial and federal policies and legislation is an asset.
  • Effective customer service public relations and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Valid Pesticide Applicator Certificate or the understanding how herbicides work would be an asset.
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers licence and submission of a 5-year Drivers Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms) standing bending shoveling etc.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work a variety of shift work.
