Job Summary
The Labourer 3 (Sessional) is responsible for the maintenance of all hard/soft outdoor surfaces and fields of play for the Department of Athletics and Recreation at the University of British Columbia Point Grey Campus. The Labourer 3 performs tasks such as mowing edging planting and pruning.

This is a sessional position with 8 months of work followed by 4 months of layoff.

Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 100 employees and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 20000 students through recreational programming 25 varsity teams 17 competitive club teams along with thousands of members of the UBC community. This role will support the Head Groundskeeper in maintaining the Thunderbird Park and Thunderbird Stadium fields.

Work Performed

- Mows lawn and field areas using a riding mower

- Removes leaves and other debris from fields walkways and perimeter landscape

- Prepares soil generally by using standard tools and equipment such as rakes shovels hoes pitch and digging forks rototillers etc.

- Puts plants trees and bushes in designated locations

- Waters and distributes fertilizers to plants trees bushes lawns gardens etc.

- Moves soil mulch plants debris fertilizers supplies tools equipment and other materials to storage or various locations

- Performs lawn installation including moving and putting down turf and distributing seed

- Cuts and bucks plants small tree branches using pruners line/brush trimmers and operates brush chipper for mulching

- Moves rocks gravel and mulch to install and repair pathways and other related garden structures

- Digs moves assembles and performs minor repairs of equipment

- Operates standard power equipment such as walk behind mowers line trimmers blowers hedge trimmers and lawn edgers to perform soft/hard landscape activities

- Carries out routine minor maintenance on small equipment and rep orts faulty equipment to the appropriate staff.

- May be required to drive a truck and use specialty equipment such as large chain saws power spraying equipment riding mowers tractors bobcat high lift tree climbing equipment asphalt roller and other equipment needed for specialized tasks

- Acquires materials and equipment as required for the job in coordination with the Head Groundsperson

- Works in a correct and safe manner and follows established policies and procedures

- Acts upon trouble calls as directed by supervisory staff

- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The position will be under the direct supervision of the Head Groundsperson and failure to follow directions or making inappropriate decisions may result in unsafe playing conditions service delays and/or costs.

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision from the Head Groundskeeper from written or oral instructions blue prints drawings and work orders.

Supervision Given
None.

Minimum Qualifications
Secondary school education and/or completion of high school valid BC drivers license or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Valid Class 5 BC drivers license with a satisfactory driving record. Ability to follow policies procedures and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to work with gardening tools and equipment.
