We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as Waste Collection Labourers.
The Waste Collection Labourer position offers the successful candidates a variety in their workday. On most days you will be teamed up with another collector helping them collect waste from residential homes by collecting carts and recycling assisting with vehicle backing swamping and recording of work done.
What will you do
Heavy manual work pushing and pulling garbage and food scrap carts to and from the collection vehicle and manually loading recyclable materials and grass leaf and yard waste
Provide guidance to the driver in backing up situations
Identify surrounding/overhead hazards that will cause issues during the loading process and ensure public safety is considered and communicated to the Waste Operator
Adhere to safety and environmental regulations and work procedures
Maintain a positive customer service attitude in the performance of all duties
Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle including cleaning hoppers/traps daily
Perform related duties as required
Completion of Grade Twelve (12)
Six (6) months of labourer experience in Curbside Collection
Assets:
Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent)
Current Standard First Aid certification
Skills Required for Success:
Ability to perform heavy strenuous and agility-intensive labour for extended periods of time and under extreme weather conditions
Knowledge and application of correct weight lifting and handling techniques in order to minimize strain and lifting injury
Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination cuts slipping and associated mishaps
Ability to deal with the public during pickup of refuse and to resolve complaints of a minor nature
Ability to work alone with little or no supervision as well as the ability to work with a small team
Verbal and written communication skills

Conditions of Employment:
Passing a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test F.A.R.E.) and a pre-employment City medical examination is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position

Work Environment:
Working for extended periods in all weather conditions
Physically strenuous labor is required when maneuvering carts to pick-up areas and returning them to their original locations
Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods
