Job Title: Social Media Writer Project Summary
The Social Media Writer will support the National Science Foundations (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) by developing clear accurate and engaging social media content that communicates the value and impact of NSF-funded research and programs. This role contributes to NSFs public outreach storytelling and stakeholder engagement efforts by translating complex scientific and policy information into accessible audience-appropriate messaging across digital platforms.
The position supports a federal government communications contract and operates within a fast-paced mission-driven environment focused on public engagement transparency and accessibility.
Role Summary
The Social Media Writer develops engaging accurate social media content that supports NSFs outreach storytelling and engagement goals across science-focused platforms. The individual collaborates closely with writers multimedia producers designers and communications strategists to ensure consistent messaging aligned with NSFs mission and communications priorities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Draft engaging accurate posts for NSFs official social media channels.
- Collaborate with multimedia staff on storyboarding message development and coordinated digital storytelling.
- Apply Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) principles where appropriate to improve reach and discoverability.
- Ensure all social media products comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility standards.
- Maintain consistency with NSF branding tone and messaging guidelines.
- Support timely content development for campaigns announcements events and emerging topics.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years of experience writing for social media platforms.
- Strong editorial judgment and messaging skills.
- Experience using social media management and scheduling tools.
Preferred Strengths
- Experience supporting science agencies research institutions or STEM-focused organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to distill complex scientific or technical topics into concise engaging messaging for general audiences.
- Familiarity with accessibility requirements for digital and science-related content.
Work Location and Schedule
- Place of Performance: Primarily on-site at NSF Headquarters in Alexandria VA.
- Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
- Situational or regular telework may be available with prior approval from the Contracting Officers Representative (COR).
Security Requirement
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
