Job Title: Science / Technical Writer Project Summary

The Science/Technical Writer will support the National Science Foundation s (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) by developing clear accurate and engaging scientific and technical content for digital and print platforms. This role supports NSF s mission to communicate the value and impact of federally funded research by translating complex scientific concepts into accessible materials for diverse audiences including policymakers researchers educators media and the general public.

The position supports a federal government communications contract and operates in a collaborative research-focused environment that prioritizes technical accuracy accessibility and public engagement.

Role Summary

The Science/Technical Writer develops and edits scientific and technical content that explains NSF programs initiatives and research outcomes in a clear accurate and audience-appropriate manner. The individual works closely with subject-matter experts communications staff and leadership to ensure all materials are factually accurate accessible and aligned with NSF s strategic communications goals.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and edit technical and scientific content for reports web pages brochures fact sheets and other communication materials.
  • Ensure all written products adhere to Federal Plain Language Guidelines and Section 508 accessibility requirements.
  • Collaborate with subject-matter experts to accurately convey scientific information in clear concise language.
  • Adapt content for multiple formats including digital platforms and print publications.
  • Review and revise materials for accuracy clarity consistency and completeness maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Translate complex scientific concepts into language suitable for mainstream audiences without compromising technical accuracy.
  • Support the development and execution of strategic communications plans ensuring content aligns with organizational objectives.
  • Verify and maintain factual accuracy across all published materials.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor s degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. biology chemistry physics) required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in science or technical writing preferably in a federal or research environment.
  • Strong understanding of Federal Plain Language Guidelines and Section 508 compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to create content for both digital and print media.
  • Experience contributing to strategic communications plans.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with scientists researchers and communications teams.
Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with NSF programs and initiatives.
  • Experience with content management systems and digital publishing tools.
  • Knowledge of best practices for accessibility and inclusive communication.
Work Location and Schedule
  • Place of Performance: Primarily on-site at NSF Headquarters in Alexandria VA.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
  • Telework may be available with prior approval from the Contracting Officer s Representative (COR).
Security Requirement
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
