Job Summary

Are you passionate about creating safe and vibrant spaces for the community to enjoy The City of Edmonton is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Infrastructure Maintenance team as a Labourer II - Playspaces and Site this role you will be at the forefront of maintaining the equipment and features that make our citys parks and playgrounds special. If you enjoy hands-on work operating a variety of machinery and contributing to the year-round beauty and safety of our outdoor spaces we want to hear from you!

Reporting to a Licensed Crew Lead you will champion our playspaces to the highest safety standards specifically the Canadian Standards Association Z614 specifications. Your work is essential to the year-round maintenance and operational success of our parks involving everything from detailed playground inspections to the repair of site furniture.. You will operate a wide range of tools and motor vehicles to perform semi-skilled manual labour and asset rehabilitation. This role requires a proactive approach to safety ensuring a secure environment for yourself your colleagues and the public. By maintaining these assets you directly impact the safety and satisfaction of everyone who uses our park systems. Ultimately you will serve as an ambassador for our cultural commitments of being safe helpful accountable integrated and excellent.

What will you do

  • Perform inspections and repairs of playground equipment and features to ensure safety tolerances are met
  • Maintain and rehabilitate various playground surfaces and park assets such as benches and other site furniture
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools shop tools and equipment including skid steers tractors chainsaws and snow blowers
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform minor maintenance to ensure tools are functioning properly
  • Participate in safety talks and complete essential documentation such as inspection reports accident reports and inventories
  • Identify required minor repairs after inspections and recommend necessary replacement parts
  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) year of experience in playground and park in parks construction maintenance and operations

Assets:

  • Overhead Crane Certification
  • Crane Truck Certification
  • Eligibility for Canadian Playground Safety Institute (CPSI) certification

Skills required for success:

  • Experience with Playspaces including; operation of various pickup and crane trucks (1 to 3 ton) various tractor equipment (such as utility and skid steer) tools and methods are required or equivalent
  • Knowledge of City/department policies/procedures/standards and relevant legislation (WHMIS SOPs)
  • Maintaining a range of assets and troubleshooting specific types of playground equipment.
  • Ability to interpret work assignments and accurately complete task cards or work records
  • Effective communication skills for mentoring and training crew members in functional areas
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills particularly in troubleshooting playground equipment and determining efficient work methods
  • Work collaboratively within a diverse team environment to complete seasonal work plans and meet operational deadlines

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Environment:

  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust noise light variation vibrations chemicals animals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing walking kneeling bending stooping crouching lifting items up to 100 pounds pushing pulling reaching using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • Availability to provide 24 hour 7 days per week coverage.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $25.935 - $34.208 (hourly); $54152.28 - $71426.30 (Annually)
