Marketplace is Canadas award-winning consumer investigative program and one of the most popular news programs on CBC. The program has been delivering investigative journalism about all aspects of consumer life for more than 50 years and were searching for a senior reporter to become the programs next host.

You must be a senior journalist who peers recognize as a positive leader. You love and have experience telling investigative stories through a consumer lens are confident innovative and comfortable delivering accountability interviews.

You have no problem seeing yourself present stories from auto theft and scams to misleading food labels. Thats because your storytelling is not full of old style tv fact you have an approach that is immersive you let real moments breathe and you prioritize actuality because you know the right ingredients to reach an audience that mostly streams their content. At the same time you know how to conduct an accountability interview in such an authentic way that pulls out the information our viewers need without being performative.

Your attention to detail fact check process and your journalistic ethics are second to none because of the investigative work required. You have a deep understanding and appreciation for CBCs rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practices and have an advanced understanding of legal requirements in investigative reporting. You can also apply all of this live and on-demand.

You can deliver stories on multi-platforms including video audio online and social media that resonate with audiences. This means you have a comfort level in front of the camera that builds connections and trust with the audience. Your conversational natural and authentic delivery is true to who you are and allows you to connect with our target audience like no one else.

You come with creative ideas for reaching our audiences wherever theyre consuming our content a willingness to challenge yourself and a desire to be a part of an iconic program to promote the value of investigative journalism inclusion and accountability.

Please note this is a one year contractual role.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A university degree or equivalent experience.

  • An informed understanding of what Canadians are interested in

  • A strong connection to communities currently underrepresented in Canadian journalism.

  • A minimum of 7 years experience as a host/reporter/correspondent at the national network level or in a major market.

  • A recognized positive leader and team player

  • Highly developed television on-air performance skills.

  • Demonstrated and exceptional television interviewing skills.

  • Experience in understanding and distilling complex research into scripts.

  • Superior understanding of domestic and world issues.

  • Expertise in covering a wide range of stories.

  • Exceptional leadership and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback on interviews story structure and writing.

  • Strong story ideas and critical thinking.

  • Excellent writing and research skills.

  • A strong understanding of social and digital media and a proven ability to use them effectively.

  • Ability to work calmly and collaboratively under deadline pressure.

  • Full knowledge and understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and an ability to make quick judgements in accordance with these guidelines.

  • Developed knowledge of legal requirements as they relate to investigative journalism.

  • French is an asset.

  • Ability to travel across Canada and internationally

  • This job requires a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends. Overtime may be required at times.
