Position Summary
The Senior Cost Accountant plays a critical role in supporting a complex manufacturing environment with significant government contracting exposure. This position is responsible for inventory valuation cost accounting government cost proposal development TINA rate maintenance and management reporting. The role requires strong analytical capabilities deep regulatory knowledge and the ability to operate independently while supporting audits compliance and operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Execute all inventory valuation activities during month-end close including reconciliations valuation analysis journal entries and financial reporting.
- Calculate and maintain reserves for excess obsolete quarantine and aged inventory.
- Perform lower-of-cost or net realizable value (LCNRV) analyses in compliance with US GAAP and FAR requirements.
- Analyze manufacturing overhead rates and production cost variances.
Government Compliance & Proposals
- Develop and maintain TINA-compliant rates and supporting documentation.
- Prepare certified cost and pricing proposals for government contracts.
- Support DCAA audits and other government reviews.
- Ensure compliance with FAR CAS and TINA regulations.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Develop and maintain inventory-related processes and internal controls including cycle count planning and execution.
- Review cost allocation methodologies and recommend improvements.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction working capital optimization and process efficiency.
Reporting & Analytics
- Design and develop analytical tools dashboards and reports using Power BI.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define meaningful KPIs and ensure data accuracy.
- Provide management reporting and ad-hoc financial analysis to support business decisions.
Audits & Special Projects
- Participate in internal external SOX and DCAA audits.
- Support special projects and additional financial analyses as assigned.
- Uphold ethical standards and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Required Experience & Knowledge
- Prior experience as a Cost Accountant in a complex manufacturing environment.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR)
- Cost Accounting Standards (CAS)
- Truth in Negotiations Act (TINA)
- Solid understanding of inventory valuation under US GAAP and government contracting rules.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Advanced Excel skills; Power BI experience strongly preferred
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
- Effective communication skills with cross-functional teams
