We are seeking a compassionate professional and highly motivated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive primary school in Barnet North London. Role Overview

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers the SENCo and other support staff to provide targeted assistance to children with additional needs including learning difficulties autism spectrum disorders speech and language challenges social emotional or behavioural needs and physical disabilities.

You will work in one-to-one and small group settings delivering interventions supporting classroom participation and helping children develop essential skills for learning and social interaction. Your role will also involve collaborating with parents external agencies and the wider school team to ensure that each child receives comprehensive and effective support.

This position requires patience empathy flexibility and the ability to respond to the individual needs of each child while maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

The SEN Teaching Assistant will be expected to:

  • Support pupils with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings implementing individualised learning programmes

  • Assist with the preparation adaptation and delivery of teaching resources to meet individual needs

  • Support childrens literacy numeracy communication and social-emotional development

  • Implement strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing

  • Encourage independence self-confidence and engagement in learning

  • Observe record and report on childrens progress to the class teacher and SENCo

  • Support children with physical needs or personal care routines where required

  • Collaborate with teachers SENCo parents and external professionals to ensure consistent support

  • Facilitate childrens access to classroom activities alongside their peers

  • Contribute to maintaining a safe stimulating and inclusive learning environment

  • Maintain accurate records of interventions outcomes and progress

  • Participate in staff training professional development and team meetings

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be compassionate patient and committed to supporting children with a range of additional needs. You should be able to build strong positive relationships with pupils colleagues and families and demonstrate resilience flexibility and professionalism.

The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:

  • Experience working with children with SEN in an educational or childcare setting

  • Knowledge of learning difficulties autism spectrum disorders and strategies to support social emotional and behavioural development

  • Ability to adapt learning activities to meet the needs of individual pupils

  • Strong teamwork communication and organisational skills

  • Patience empathy and a calm approach in challenging situations

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

A relevant qualification in SEN education or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with significant practical experience and a willingness to engage in professional development.
