Description of Work

The captains position oversees maintenance and interpretation of the 16th century sailing vessel the Elizabeth II and all associated small watercraft. This position leads the volunteer crew sailing program including training recruitment monthly crew weekend training sessions and administrative tasks related to the volunteer program. The position will work with ports-of-call park leadership and other stakeholders to plan and execute training sails outreach sails and routine haul out.

The Elizabeth II is maintained in accordance with historical practices using skills and materials from that period. The Elizabeth II captain position is public facing and reports to the Manager of Education and Interpretation.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure yearly inspections and maintain current knowledge of all regulations associated with moving watercraft in navigable waterways.

Training staff and volunteers in rigging sail making caulking and marine woodworking.

Conducting educational programs and events and speaking in front of diverse audiences.

Sailing the Elizabeth II as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience operating watercraft over 40 feet in length.
  • Demonstrated experience with traditional watercraft maintenance including woodworking rigging and marlinspike seamanship.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of marine engines pumps generators and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience training and supervising volunteers.
  • Experience conducting hands-on interpretive programs.

Salary Range: $39671 - $69426

Recruitment Range: $39671 - $55327

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to command and manage a 16th century square-rigged ship both underway and as a dockside educational tool.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and one weekend (Sat. & Sun.) a month with occasional holidays.
  • Must have a valid U.S. Coast Guard License as a vessel operator or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in history or a degree specific to the area of specialization required from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

three years of progressive experience in a historical agency;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description:

Roanoke Island Festival Park is a 27-acre site. First opening in 1983 with the Elizabeth II a 16th century replica sailing vessel a visitor/ticket sales center offices and a 50-seat 1998 an expansion project was completed adding an 8500 . Adventure Museum; a 240-seat film/small performance indoor theatre; . meeting room; an outdoor performance pavilion with lawn seating for 3500; a museum store; administrative offices; maintenance facilities; waterside boardwalks; and a public Kayak Launch.
