About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction purchasing and contracting for goods and services maintaining facilities managing state vehicles acquiring and disposing of real property and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Job Duties: The intern will assist in supporting APNEPs staff in updating and developing engagement materials focused on raising awareness of the Partnerships work. This may include estuarine ecology and coastal habitat protection ecosystem and community resilience with a focus on water quality water quantity (ecological flows) wetlands and/or seagrass protection in the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary.

Major Task to be Performed:The intern will learn about environmental issues in the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary and assist in development and implementation of communication and outreach campaigns. These may include written digital and visual mediums and platforms including webpages social media blog posts newsletters press releases flyers brochures infographics interactive maps and videos.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Experience helping develop a workplan tailored to the needs of the program that appeals to their strengths and interests. Creation of one or more final products that the intern can add to their resume and career portfolio. Experience working with interdisciplinary scientists communications specialists and managers to synthesize and effectively communicate scientific and technical information to broad audiences including the public local communities and governments elected officials and decision makers.

2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday May 18 Friday July 24 2026

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Strong writing and editing abilities understanding of the principles of science communication ability to translate scientific or technical information for non-technical audiences understanding of community engagement practices. Basic knowledge of or interest in environmental science natural resource management watershed protection estuaries and the coastal plain. Experience with social media website content graphic design ArcGIS / AGOL mapping Storymaps creating or implementing communications campaigns/strategies desired though no applicant is expected to possess all of these skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college university law school community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1 2026.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.

This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
