About the opportunity

The institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is looking for a Senior Technical Officer to provide advanced technical expertise and leadership within the Fisheries and Aquaculture Centre (IMAS-F&A) and to support research more broadly across the institute.

In this role you will support marine science through field and laboratory-based research with a particular focus on taxonomy sample curation and research infrastructure. You will also contribute to teaching by providing technical and taxonomic expertise that enhances practical classes and student learning.

As our new Senior Technical Officer - Marine Taxonomy and Research Support you will manage technical resources supervise laboratory and field operations ensure compliance with WH&S protocols and provide guidance to researchers and students. You will also contribute to data collection analysis and reporting and play a key role in curating biological samples and research collections. Integrative taxonomic skills and experience in sample identification and classification are essential.

The support provided by this position will also extend to the Ecology and Biodiversity Centre (IMAS-E&B) when required.

What youll do:

  • Maintain laboratory and field infrastructure to ensure safe efficient and research-ready facilities.
  • Provide technical support for marine research projects including sample collection laboratory analysis data management and compliance with WH&S protocols.
  • Apply integrative taxonomic expertise to accurately identify and classify marine organisms contributing to biodiversity assessments and research outputs.
  • Curate and manage biological samples and collections ensuring proper documentation storage and accessibility.
  • Support undergraduate teaching activities by providing technical and taxonomic expertise that enhances the delivery of practical classes and student learning.

What were looking for:

  • A degree in marine science aquaculture environmental science or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in marine organism identification and classification.
  • Experience in planning and conducting marine fieldwork.
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques for processing and analysing marine biological samples.
  • Competence in data management and analysis including the use of scientific software.
  • Familiarity with supporting undergraduate teaching through the provision of technical and taxonomic expertise in practical class settings.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116872 comprising base salary within the range of $92120 to $99891 plus 17% superannuation.
