Finance Planning and Budgeting (FPB) encompasses the major central financial planning and budgeting functions for the University of Washington including:

  • Finance & Budget Strategy
  • Institutional Analytics & Data Support
  • Policy Planning & State Operations
  • University Business Services

The Grant Analyst plays a key role in the Grant & Contract Accounting office providing responsive customer service and compliance support to campus departments central offices and research sponsors. This position independently analyzes fiscal and administrative records interprets policies and procedures and develops tools and training to strengthen compliance. The analyst builds collaborative relationships with faculty researchers and administrators to ensure clear communication timely service and effective resolution of post-award issues. Responsibilities include conducting financial and compliance reviews advising on best practices assessing risks and delivering targeted outreach. The role may also contribute expertise to complex initiatives and special projects.

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to inquiries applying expert knowledge of award regulations fiscal policies and University procedures
  • Develop and deliver effective training communications and guidance to campus stakeholders
  • Advise faculty and staff on compliance and fiscal matters and consult with sponsors and peer institutions to resolve complex issues
  • Identify risks assess operations and recommend improvements to strengthen efficiency and compliance
  • Prepare financial reports and reconciliations to support leadership decision-making
  • Coordinate the implementation of compliance recommendations and ensure appropriate oversight structures are in place
  • Provide direction and guidance to administrative and financial staff to promote consistency and best practices

Compliance Program Support

  • Maintain compliance programs reporting systems and fiscal procedures in alignment with University policies and sponsor requirements
  • Develop compliance tools analytics and training materials to support campus stakeholders
  • Perform complex fiscal analyses including projections reconciliations and reporting to guide post-award compliance and decision-making
  • Evaluate budgeting applications conduct statistical analyses and recommend process improvements
  • Research trends assess risks and analyze practices to strengthen compliance and operational effectiveness
  • Review internal controls and recommend enhancements to ensure accountability and regulatory compliance
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • BS or BA degree in Business Administration Finance Accounting or other related field AND four years of demonstrated experience in fiscal management and/or financial analysis
  • Ability to maintain the customer service work schedule of 8:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday
  • Proficiency in using spreadsheets word processing and database applications in a Windows-based environment
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex policies and procedures and effectively communicate them to others
  • Proven leadership capabilities and excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations to large groups
  • Experience working in large highly structured organizational settings
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of reliability accuracy and productivity
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to maintain positive working relationships and address complex or sensitive administrative matters
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting critical deadlines
  • Sound judgment and the ability to exercise discretion and independent decision-making
  • Demonstrated experience in working with diverse groups stakeholders and teams; collaborative inclusive and service-oriented style and the ability to foster a culture of excellence accountability and teamwork

Desired:

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Participated in a work environment using Lean or a similar structured process improvement effort
