Job Description

A perfusionist works alongside the surgical team to care for people undergoing a heart procedure or those with critical illnesses requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Perfusionists operate equipment that externally and temporarily replaces or assists the heart and lungs.

Set up and operates heart/lung machines that support organ function during cardiac surgery or other procedures where circulatory or respiratory function is disrupted. Operates equipment to produce bypasses coronary perfusion recirculation or partial bypasses or to alter blood temperature balance or content.

Perfusionists are highly trained and certified medical professionals responsible for the planning preparation and operation of cardiopulmonary bypass mechanical circulatory support extracorporeal support technologies and blood conservation strategies as well as the hematologic hemodynamic physiologic anesthetic and biochemical monitoring and treatment of patients and organs during such procedures.

Additional Job Description

Bachelor of Science degree in Perfusion Technology or Bachelor of Science degree with a certificate in Perfusion Technology from an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program and one year of clinical experience required; pediatric experience preferred. Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required.
Required Licensure Certifications Registrations: Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
