Description of Work

This posting is for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II position located in the Rowan Equipment Sub Shop in Rowan County. This position will function as a Level II mechanic and will perform skilled mechanic work. The selected applicant will perform a range of progressive tasks involving services and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. This position may perform mechanic work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanic work in the following: preventive maintenance tires and tubes wheels and rims cranking systems lighting systems cooling systems fuel systems and hydraulic systems. Employee is required to furnish a set of mechanics tools. Position requires work during adverse weather such as snow and/or ice tornadoes hurricanes etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours weekends and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment equipment repair inventory and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to providing a safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 / $37782 - $66120

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of one of the following: light medium heavy duty or farm equipment brake components.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light medium heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
  • Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic software tools and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Safety-toed shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
