Department Description
The Facilities and Operations team is responsible for overseeing day-to-day facility operations and providing service and support in the areas of Office Services Facilities Engineering Janitorial and Shipping and Receiving. We are charged with maintaining and improving our beautiful building while keeping staff visitors and artworks safe and comfortable. This includes infrastructure maintenance supplies logistics and exhibitions support. Project Managements role within Ops is to manage special projects that require a higher level of planning coordination and collaboration.
Position Description
The FacOps 3D Scanning Intern will support the museum by adding to our library of gallery scans. Using a Leica BLK360 3D scanner they will take lidar and image scans assemble point clouds and create 3D models of the facility. These models will be used by multiple departments for everyday business for years to addition to the scanning exercise our intern will assist us in a detailed reorganization of our digital and hardcopy architectural drawings.
Project Plan
Over the 9-week program the Operations 3D Scanning Intern will contribute 3D scans of spaces within SFMOMA to improve building and space awareness engagement and employee efficiency by:
Meeting with various members of the Operations Team and partners to understand the need for and usage of Lidar
scans of the entire building with a focus on gallery and public spaces.
Learning how to operate the Lidar scanner and ingest point clouds into Sketchup.
Executing Lidar scans of gallery and public spaces create and upload point clouds to the internet.
Auditing existing Building Plan Archives organization nomenclature and gaps in information.
Working with department staff to understand how the Operations Team utilizes the Building Plan Archive.
Participating in other team projects requiring technical expertise and creativity in analysis.
This project supports the FacOps goals Provide an exceptional office experience for staff and Reduce the environmental impact of the museum facility.
Educational Objectives
Acquiretechnical skills related to 3D scans bundling pointcloudsand3dmodeling.
Understand the role andobjectivesof the Facilities and Operations department.
Develop cross-functional and collaborative skills.
Practice important organizational and archival work with the museums architectural drawings.
Additional Internship Programming
The Summer 2026 Internship will offer 9-weeks of hands-on experience and mentorship along with weekly presentations and discussions with various departments in the museum off-site educational visits within the Bay Area community and access to various tours and events within the museum.
Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled in school or a recent graduate. The SFMOMA recognizes a graduation date
within 6 months of the internship start date as a recent graduate.

University level study in architectureconstructionor related fields.
Experience with 3-D scans point clouds and 3D models
Experience converting point clouds into Revit and/or SketchUp models
Detail-oriented and organized
